Chapter 8
A famous man once said that in this world, people all ran in a rough way and grew from the pain.
Therefore, Vanessa calmed down and quickly recovered from the embarrassment.
What was wrong with plastic?
It was the greatest invention, and it changed people's lives, though people thought it was the worst invention now due to environmental pollution. However, no one should deny the changes it brought to the world.
"My ancestors were all farmers and lived a poor life, so there was no valuable thing to be inherited!"
Vanessa said with emotions, but she looked very calm.
"Although it was plastic, it was the most precious thing in my family at that time."
"My grandma wrapped it carefully with her favorite scarves. She really cherished it very much!"
"You know, it was plastic, so it was easy to break, so my grandma barely wore it."
"And I won't wear it either if it isn't for the special moment."
When she spoke, the person on the other end of the phone kept silent all the time.
Vanessa sat on the sofa. It was so quiet now that Vanessa could even hear the sound of the humidifier working.
A few seconds later, Barron's voice sounded.
"Ms. Green, when do you need it?"
"Well, the sooner, the better!"
Barron made no answer.
"I can't sleep without it!"
"Where are you now? I can bring it to you!"
"Don't bother! I can go take it by myself!"
"I see."
Then, Barron hung up.
A few minutes later, Vanessa received a message with an address.
She read the message. "Kiabo Garden?" she murmured.
If it was the Kiabo Garden she knew, based on her knowledge of house prices in this area, Vanessa believed that it was definitely not Barron's family address.
Then...
Vanessa suddenly realized something. She immediately stood up and rushed into her bedroom.
She opened her closet and quickly changed her clothes. Then, she went to the dresser and picked up the lipstick that had been complimented most by men in a row of lipsticks.
When she was about to put lipstick on her lips, she suddenly thought of something and put the lipstick down.
In the end, she wiped the lipstick on her lips.
It was a bit cold at night. Vanessa took a taxi. The streets were noisy and full of activity under the neons. Half an hour later, the taxi stopped in front of the gate of the Kiabo Garden.
The guards in uniforms stood on two platforms motionlessly like trees.
Vanessa walked to the guard room. The young guard asked her a few questions and let her sign the register before Vanessa came into the Kiabo Garden.
Ten minutes later, Vanessa arrived at Shawn's villa. Before she rang the bell, Vanessa took a deep breath.
Since she left home, everything went smoothly on the way. She didn't even meet a traffic jam! Vanessa couldn't help but feel so unreal at this time.
Vanessa thought of one sentence she had read in a book. As nothing happened, something would happen.
She felt a bit nervous. However, since she was already here, she didn't need to hesitate.
Vanessa smooth her hair with her hand and rang the bell.
After a while, the door was open slowly. Vanessa lowered her head and showed a sweet smile. Then, she raised her head.
However, there was no one in front of her.
It was an automatic door.
The smile on Vanessa's face disappeared. She walked into the villa.
She walked across the porch, and there was still some distance to the living room, and the outdoor balcony was closer to her.
Vanessa's gaze drifted around the living room to look for Shawn, while she suddenly felt that someone was watching her. She then turned her head and looked to the left.
The overhead light in the living room wasn't on at this time. At night, the dim light of the floor lamp illumined a corner, soft and quiet.
Shawn was now sitting under the light and leaning back in his chair with his legs stretched out. He was now reading a magazine.
His glasses shone slightly in the light, which radiated in his pale skin.
Afraid of breaking the beautiful scene, Vanessa didn't speak.
A breeze blew, and Shawn finally raised his head and looked at Vanessa. Her hair flew back in the wind
They looked at each other.
Vanessa walked in. It was a bit cold at night, and Vanessa's nose was slightly red.
She met Shawn's gaze and walked forward, running her hand through her hair. "Mr. Yeats, I came to get my thing."
Shawn raised his chin, motioning her to get it from the table.
Vanessa immediately walked to the table.
She blinked as all kinds of thoughts ran through her mind. Shawn shifted his gaze from Vanessa to the magazine in his hand, but in the end, he closed the magazine.
The plastic pearl earring was now put on a table, slightly shining under the moonlight.
Vanessa reached out to pick it up when she suddenly noticed something familiar on the counter behind the table out of the corner of her eye.
She glanced at the counter and could hardly believe what she had seen.
They were Rachel's music albums!
Although Rachel was a very famous singer before, a pop diva in the hall of fame of the music, she looked nothing like Shawn's taste in music. After all, she was in her forties now.
Vanessa turned her head to glance at Shawn but suddenly met Shawn's gaze.
She was quiet for a moment and looked straight at Shawn while saying casually, "So, Mr. Yeats, you like Rachel, right?"
Vanessa stopped thinking about why Shawn would like to hear Rachel's songs and just began to talk to him about this topic.
Shawn glanced at the counter and made no answer. Then, Vanessa continued to say, "You know what? I like her too! I also collected her music albums!"
While she spoke, Vanessa walked to Shawn with a smile, "What's your favorite song of Rachel?"
As Vanessa was approaching Shawn, a loud sound came from one of the rooms.
Vanessa was startled. She didn't expect that there was someone else in the villa.
Meanwhile, she noticed that there was a white cashmere coat on the sofa near her.
Near the coat were a black handbag and a light yellow scarf.
Immediately, a very thought brought her out in a cold sweat.
There was another woman in this villa.
It was a young woman!
She must be Shawn's girlfriend.
Vanessa totally went blank at this moment.
Inside, she was a maelstrom of churning emotions.
Shawn had a girlfriend!
And she came here right at the moment they were having a date!
She suddenly had a feeling that she might be beaten by Shawn's girlfriend if she didn't leave as soon as possible. She grabbed her plastic pearl earring and was about to leave. "Alright! I gotta go now!"
Shawn leaned against the table and bent slightly so that his shirt was a bit crumpled. He looked down at Vanessa and gave her a long searching look. "You want to leave now?"
"Yeah! It's too late now!" Vanessa nodded at him and turned around to leave.
But when she walked to the door, Vanessa frowned. She still didn't want to give up.
It wasn't about the time she had spent before. If Shawn really had a girlfriend, she would never show up in front of Shawn.
However, before that, she needed to make a final confirmation.
Therefore, Vanessa stopped before she was about to open the door.
She held the door, slowly turned her head, and looked at Shawn.
Shawn noticed that Vanessa didn't leave, so he also turned around to look at her.
"Well..."
With blushed face, Vanessa said in a soft voice awkwardly.
"My period has come, so can I borrow your girlfriend a tampon?"
Shawn asked with a raised eyebrow, "My girlfriend?"
His answer was still vague. Vanessa then continued to ask, "Is it your girlfriend in that room?"
She looked at that room and bit her lip nervously.
Shawn followed Vanessa's gaze and looked back at the room behind him. When he looked at Vanessa again, he smiled.
"No!"
Vanessa breathed a sigh of relief.
She was at ease now. Her palms were wet with sweat out of nervousness. "Okay! Great..." she murmured.
She was so freaked out just now.
Shawn raised his head and looked at Vanessa.
Her shifty look, blushed face, and her words all showed her intent.
Shawn lowered his head and unbuttoned his sleeves.
"Oh? What made you feel great?"
Vanessa was a bit embarrassed.
She didn't know how to explain.
"Just... It's great that the unnecessary misunderstanding won't happen!"
"What kind of misunderstanding?"
Vanessa looked up at Shawn. He was very serious now like he really wanted to know the answer, but Vanessa still felt that Shawn was just asking deliberately.
She lowered her voice and said with embarrassment.
"Em, well..."
Vanessa spoke haltingly.
She looked down at the ground while blinking her eyes. She could feel her ears reddening with embarrassment.
Shawn loosed the sleeves and put his hands by his sides. He leaned against the table lazily and looked at Vanessa with a teasing smile.
"Why do you think that my niece won't misunderstand something?"
So, it was his niece in that room.
Vanessa breathed a sigh of relief.
Wait! His niece?
Vanessa suddenly realized something. At this moment, she totally forgot her ulterior motive to come here. Her legs went weak, and the hairs on the back of her neck prickled when she thought that Shawn's niece was Bianca. She knew she had to leave here right now.
If she met Bianca now, all her plans would be exposed.
Meanwhile, she heard footsteps on the staircase.
Vanessa had no time to consider Shawn's question. At this time, she regretted so much to come here.
"You're right! It's not good if your niece misunderstands something. I gotta go now!" In a great panic, her voice even trembled slightly. "Have a good night!"
As soon as she finished speaking, Vanessa immediately ran away and slammed the door.
The door banged shut behind her, and it was very quiet in the room.
Sophia walked out of the study and asked, "Who was it? I heard a woman's voice!"
Shawn turned his gaze and walked to the balcony.
Seeing that Shawn was in a good mood, Sophia immediately walked to him and asked, "Who was it? Your girlfriend?"
Shawn sat on the chair and opened the magazine while coldly glancing at Sophia.
Sophia immediately stopped talking.
She slowly squatted down and looked at Shawn with an ingratiating smile.
"I have an idea, uncle! I don't want to go to work. I want to study abroad!"
"Study abroad?" Shawn said coldly without even looking at her, "Are you sure you are going to study abroad instead of having fun abroad?"
Sophia made no answer.
She really didn't know why people had to work hard.
Since she was only a little kid, Sophia was clear that her family was very rich and could support her whole life.
Everyone in her family was working hard to earn the money. Clearly, there must be someone to spend the money, and it was her!
Therefore, she frittered her time in high school. She didn't know what the chemistry was but knew a lot about cosmetics.
There was no wonder that she graduated with a poor score. After high school, she was sent abroad to finish college.
However, she almost couldn't graduate this year.
Because she arranged a paid test taker to sit in her place and take the final examination.
Her family negotiated with the principal for a long time, and she finally got her certificate of degree.
Even her father, Edward Yost, who had always spoiled her, also got angry.
Unexpectedly, Shawn didn't say anything. Sophis secretly breathed a sigh of relief.
After all, Shawn was the one she was afraid of the most in this world.
A few days later, Shawn directly arranged for Sophia to work in Financeweek.
Sophia then realized that she really annoyed Shawn.
It came as a big blow for Sophia.
She didn't even attend classes on time for her entrance exams, and now she had to work every day for a small salary as a trainee! It must be kidding!
"It's already October, uncle," Sophia said unhappily, "It's two months before the New Year! why don't we talk about it afterward?"
Shawn just ignored what she had said.
Sophia begged for a long time, but Shawn just said.
"There are no useless people in our family!"
Sophia then stopped talking.
...
October was the month for major companies to hold the on-campus recruitment. Financeweek's on-campus recruitment this year just finished. The HR and interviewers all had returned to the company from the college and started to prepare for the arrival of fresh graduates.
However, as an old media platform independent from the southern media, it was very competitive to get the chance to work in Financeweek, and only a few new people were recruited to the editorial department every year.
The supervisor of the real estate team next door didn't recruit anyone this year.
And there would be two fresh graduates who came to work in the financial team this afternoon.
After lunch, Zoie called Vanessa into her office.
When Vanessa came out, there was a resume in her hand.
"What's going on?" Tracy saw the resume and asked, "Does Zoie let you train the new graduate?"
Vanessa shrugged her shoulders and gave the resume to Tracy.
"I'm so bothered."
Tracy turned over the resume and glanced at the photo.
"Not bad! She looks beautiful."
Then, she looked down and raised an eyebrow when she saw the name of the college.
"Look, she graduated from the same great college as Zoie! What are you bothering?"
Vanessa rested her chin on her hand unhappily.
"Look at her grades and internship experiences."
Tracy continued to glance over the resume. The newcomer's overall GPA couldn't get worse, not to mention her internship experiences. The newcomer even listed her experience of taking part in the Campus Singer Competition, which could show that the newcomer really had no advantage! She definitely frittered her time away when she was at the university.
Clearly, the newcomer was a spoiled kid from a rich family.
Tracy gave the resume back to Vanessa and gloated. "Let you train the newcomer! Zoie is so nice to you!"
Vanessa pressed her head on the table and stopped talking.
After the lunch break, HR came over with new office supplies in her arms. She put all the stuff on the empty table next to Vanessa. Then, she started checking the computer.
Vanessa looked at her and sighed secretly.
She felt so annoyed at this time.
She had to work hard every day and tried her best to gain Shawn's attention. She had no time to train the newcomer!
She wouldn't be so annoyed if the newcomer was an excellent talent, but according to the resume, the newcomer was obviously not a talent.
Zoie left Vanessa no room to refuse that. Zoie said that she would rest assured that only did Vanessa train the newcomer. "It is also for your own good!" Zoie said to Vanessa at that time.
Zoie looked so sincere at that time that Vanessa almost believed what she said.
After twenty minutes, the newcomer finally came.
The sound of footsteps broke the stillness in the office, and everyone turned their heads and saw HR coming with a young girl.
The young girl looked beautiful, dressed in a classy way, revealing her good taste. In her eyes, there was a trace of excitement for the first day to work.
HR brought the young girl to Vanessa and explained some things. Then, she left.
Vanessa and the young girl then looked at each other with embarrassment and introduced themselves with studied casualness.
"Vanessa, nice to meet you!"
"Hi, I'm Sophia, nice to meet you too."
...
After that, Vanessa started to work on revising Shawn's interview draft again. She soon was addicted to work. After a while, Tracy coughed gently to attract her attention and motioned her to look at her phone.
On the Wechat.
Tracy sent a message to her. "The intern has been on her phone for over an hour. She must be very confused about what she is supposed to do now! Maybe you should give her some work."
Vanessa turned her head and looked at Sophia.
Confused?
Vanessa didn't think so. Actually, Sophia looked very happy while playing with her phone.
Anyway, it was her duty to train the intern. Vanessa couldn't leave her unattended.
She thought for a moment and decided to give Sophia a simple work.
"Sophia," Vanessa said while handing her a recording pen, "Take this."
Sophia took over the recording pen. Vanessa said, "It's the record of my last interview. You can work it up into a first draft and give it to me by the end of the day!"
Sophia thought that all she had to do were just listen and write, so she thought there was nothing difficult for her.
Sophia nodded and said, "Okay!"
She put on the headphones and exported the audio file. When she saw that the file name was "Shawn interview recording", she froze for a moment. Then, the fear when she was facing her uncle rose in her heart.
Then, Sophia played the audio. The whole audio was 120 minutes. Fear clutched at her heart.
Then, Sophia began to listen to the audio.
Shawn spoke 378 words in total when he answered the first question in English. His pronunciation was very standard.
However, Sophia just understood around 50 words.
She clicked the progress bar with her trembling hand and quickly listened to the rest of the audio. Her self-confidence had been completely shattered.
At this time, she really regretted her decision to do this work.
