Chapter 190 The Clingy Man

Chapter 190 The Clingy Man
The call went through, and Jane greeted in a businesslike manner, "Mr. Smith."
No one responded. Jane took a look at the screen, but it showed 'on the call'. She was puzzled, so she said "hello" again tentatively.
She remembered that last time Edward called her and asked whether she arrived home or not at midnight on Vincent's birthday. Obviously, Edward was drunk, but she didn't know whether he pressed the wrong button or not this time.
Edward didn't say anything when she made sounds twice. Therefore, Jane hung up, thinking that Edward might call her by accident.
Jane went to bed again. When Jane was about to fall asleep, the phone rang again. She woke up and took the phone. It was from Edward again.
Jane got through the call and said calmly, "Hello, Mr. Smith."
Edward said, "Why did you hang up?"
The familiar low voice came from the phone with a obvious displeasing tone.

Jane said, "I said something before, but there was no sound from the call. I thought you might press the wrong button by accident."
Edward said, "Am I a fool?"
Edward didn't speak in a pleasant tone. Jane felt even more suspicious, so she couldn't help but ask, "What do you want from me?"
Edward said, "Why would I call you if there's nothing?"
Edward answered back to Jane's every word. Jane sat on the bed, but she was calmer rather than angrier, "Please tell me."
Edward kept silent for a moment and then said, "You did it on purpose, didn't you?"
After Jane waited for a moment, Edward still didn't finish his words, so she asked, "What's on purpose?"
Edward said, "Henry invited you to dinner, but why did you refuse his invitation?"
Jane said, "I was busy."
Edward asked back, "Were you really busy, or did you deliberately avoid meeting me, making me embarrassed?" Edward drank a lot, and his voice was low with a slightly nasal sound, which showed his displeasure and dissatisfaction.
Jane vaguely noticed something strange, and she guessed he was drunk, otherwise, he wouldn't say so. She wouldn't be serious with a drunkard, so she replied to him calmly, "You thought too much, and I was really busy. It had nothing to do with you."
Edward seemed to grunt in a dull voice. He questioned, "Then why did you change the apartment, and still not accompany Justin to have lunch?"
In the darkness, Jane was speechless, saying, "I get my salary from you, so there is no reason to live in your apartment again for free. About why I don't accompany Justin to have lunch, I also have explained to him because my classes in the afternoon become earlier."
Edward quickly said, "This is no stranger, so can you tell me some truth?"
His tone seemed to be more speechless than hers, with naked mockery.
Jane calmly asked, "Mr. Smith, you call me at midnight. What exactly do you want to say?"
Edward said, "Tell me what kind of grievance you have directly, and there is no need to deal with me with Justin and Henry."
Jane was irritated by the second half of his words. What did he mean by dealing with him with Justin and Henry?
Jane pulled her face at once. She said seriously, "Mr. Smith, please respect my work ethic and my own virtue. Firstly, I am not obligated to accompany students to have lunch, nor have I signed an on-call agreement; secondly, I am the personal friend with Justin and Henry, and I will not use them for any reason; thirdly, I have no so-called grievances against you. And as for you, if you have any objections to my performance at work, you can tell me anytime. There is no need for me to hide behind Justin and Henry."
Jane knew at once whether Edward seized on the opportunity to force her to apologize or not. Although Edward was drunk, she still would talk with him clearly. He couldn't put a label of "hiding behind children" on her.

The more angry Jane was, the more logical she would be. She listed four reasons to refute Edward. Hearing her words, Edward kept silent for a while and said, "Your attitude to customers is inappropriate."
Jane was speechless for a moment, and Edward said, "You always refute me whenever I say something, and you even say it to me in such a bad tone. Who is the boss on earth?"
Jane adjusted her hair, persuading herself to be kind and generous, not to take herself too seriously with a drunk man.
Jane said, "Sorry, Mr. Smith. I'll pay attention to it next time."
Edward said, "Next time? There is never a second time here." Edward's voice was low and lazy, and for a moment Jane didn't know whether Edward was indifferent or flirtatious.
Jane's eyelids twitched slightly, and she said lightly, "Then what do you mean?"
Edward said, "You have to apologize."
Jane inhaled deeply but didn't exhale, holding her breath.
After a few seconds, she said, "I'm sorry."
Edward asked, "Sorry for what?"
Jane said, "I apologize for my attitude toward you just now."
"Who do you apologize to?" Edward lowered his voice and said more softly with a bit of seduction somehow.
Jane was very sensitive, and she disliked others' teasing the most. She was quickly weighing whether Edward was really drunk, or was pretending to be drunk to tease her.
If it was the former situation, she would bear with it; while if it was the latter one, she couldn't stand it.

Jane didn't say anything for a long time, and Edward hung up. Before she lay down, the phone rang again. This was the first time that Jane felt that Edward was so clingy.
Jane answered the phone and kept silent. Edward said in an unpleasant tone, "Why did you hang up?"
Jane said without any expression, "Smith, you are too drunk."
Jane didn't say "Mr." to Edward, the drunk man, because he didn't care and wouldn't remember this after he became sober.
But Edward still remembered clearly and said, "You should apologize to me."
Jane didn't want to deal with him for a long time, so she directly said, "Sorry, Mr. Smith. It's my fault. There is no next time, and I'll pay attention to my attitude in the future."
Hearing her words, Edward said in a low voice, "If you knew this, why should you have done it in the first place?"
Jane regretted it the most that she answered his call. She could have muted the phone and ignored the call.
Jane said, "Yes, Mr. Smith. You're right."
If Edward could see Jane's face, he would have seen her perfunctory look.
He wanted to say something else, but he was too drunk to remember other things. He only remembered to ask her to apologize, and now that she had apologized, he didn't say a word anymore.
Jane asked, "Is there anything else for me, Mr. Smith?"
Edward kept silent.
Jane said, "It's too late now. I have to get up early tomorrow. Sorry, I'll hang up now."
Jane looked down to hang up, and the screen had switched to screensaver, but she didn't know when Edward hung up. She suddenly took a deep breath to be not so angry.
The phone was muted, and Jane lay down again. However, she couldn't fall asleep this time, tossing and turning. She reached for the phone in the dark, lit the screen, and found there were no missed calls. Then she put down the phone and continued to sleep. However, when she closed her eyes, she couldn't be more clear-headed.
From 2:00 a.m. to 4:30 a.m., Jane couldn't fall asleep and could only curse Edward. He must carefully choose this way to torture her, to let her not sleep, and to make her crazy and uncomfortable. It said that women's heart is the most toxic thing in the world, but it might be wrong because people might not see bad men!
Edward actually deserved the bad reputation as people said. He could even make Jane, who didn't care anything the most, angry and couldn't sleep,
It was already been dawn, and Jane just barely slept for a while. She thought she didn't fall asleep, but she woke up suddenly out of expectation. She hurriedly took her phone to check the time. It was indeed 8:52 a.m., and she had missed the time to clock in. Aaron had called her several times, but she didn't hear any call.
