Chapter 6: She Had No Choice But To Speak To Him
At half past seven, Jane and Jennifer went to a forest hotel in the suburbs. They got off the car one after another. Jane wore black shirts, black trousers and a pair of black pointy leather shoes, while Jennifer wore a white strapless dress and a pair of strappy high heels.
As soon as Jennifer got out of the car, she stretched out to hold Jane's arm in a natural way. They walked side by side, and she whispered, "Remember to hold me."
Jane said blandly, "Jennifer, take off your sunglasses. The road in front of you is wide."
Jennifer took off her sunglasses and looked aside casually. She seemed to have just found that Jane was wearing black clothes, and she raised her eyebrows and said, "Why do you wear like a bodyguard?"
Jane said, "Because you're the boss and I'm just a second banana."
Jennifer raised her chin, looked at the front and said, "My father actually dares to look down on my new company. When I took the invitation from him, he said I must be disappointed tonight. I haven't started my business yet, but he advised me to close the company. What's wrong with him? He's afraid I'll become rich very quickly and surpass him."
Jane said expressionlessly, "It means that he is very proud. He wants you to live off him and he doesn't want to live off you."
They walked in while joking. On the way, Jennifer looked around and then immediately stood in place, staring at several middle-aged people who were talking and laughing.
Jane looked over, "What's wrong?"
Jennifer said without looking away, "The one wearing brown trousers is Noah Jones, the vice president of Amber Group. Amber Group is the leader of the media industry. If I can get familiar with him, I won't have to worry about my business in the future."
Jane said, "Then what are you waiting for? Hurry up and meet your benefactor."
They stood by and waited quietly. They were beautiful, but their eyes were like those of wolves looking for food in the forest. Finally, when the people in front of Noah dispersed, Jennifer took the chance and walked forward quickly in her high heels.
Jennifer's major in university was media and communication. When she was allocated a dormitory, she was the only one left. Therefore, she was asked to live with Jane, a student in the mathematics department. They had been roommates for several years. Jennifer was very talkative, and she could even have a good conversation with introverted people. Jane never worried about her social life. She even felt that it was because of Jennifer that she had become so glib-tongued.
Looking at them from a short distance, Jane could not hear them, but it seemed that they were having a good conversation. She thought that Jennifer would succeed. However, someone approached Noah and said something to him. Then he left immediately, leaving his assistant to talk with Jennifer.
Jane was not sure about Noah's attitude, and it was not good for her to go forward, so she simply found a place to sit down and wait. As soon as she sat down, she saw Jennifer walking back while rolling her eyes. Jane got up to meet her and asked in a low voice, "Have you finished talking so quickly?"
Jennifer went berserk, "If it weren't for the fact that my father persuaded me not to make trouble for him again and again, I would have given that man a lesson!"
Jane raised her head to look in the direction of Noah's assistant. That man was looking at them as well. To be exact, he was looking at Jane.
Jennifer was angry. She pulled Jane's arm and said, "Don't pay attention to him."
Jane was curious, "Why? Is he obsessed with you? Did he flirt with you?"
Jennifer couldn't help but blurt out, "He is obsessed with you! Being with you is just his wishful thinking!"
Jane raised her eyebrows slightly, "Me?"
Jennifer gritted her teeth and said in a low voice, "He pretended to be decent when Noah was here. As soon as his boss left, he showed the cloven hoof. He's shameless..."
Jane didn't take it to heart at all. While comforting Jennifer, she said half jokingly and half seriously, "Calm down. Although you fail to talk about the cooperation, you don't have to turn nasty."
Jennifer turned to glance at her and snorted, "Don't forget that your orders have been cancelled eight times this month. Do you really think you could convince me?"
Jane pursed her lips and didn't say anything. She sighed in heart. They were both proud, and they would never sacrifice their own dignity to achieve something.
Jennifer didn't succeed, and she had made up her mind to take revenge. They took the elevator upstairs. She soon saw Noah again. He was sitting on the sofa and chatting with the big shots in the industry.
"Do anything you like here and don't miss any chance to recommend yourself. I'll introduce myself to them."
Jennifer was brisk and hurried. She left after saying that. Jane didn't think that she would screw it up until a familiar figure suddenly appears in her sight. This figure made her nervous and vigilant.
The man was about six feet tall, and he was a towering figure. As soon as he came, those people immediately got up to meet him and invited him to sit on the main seat. When he turned around and sat down, Jane saw Edward's face from a distance.
Originally, Jennifer came for Noah. Moreover, there were executives of other media companies here, and she had just given half of them her business card. Clearly, Edward broke the flattering atmosphere. Everyone observed his expression and complimented him.
Jennifer was sensible. She knew exactly how powerful Edward was in S City, and she was not qualified to get to know him. However, she had to brace herself to give him her business card, or others would think that she was ignorant.
Walking to Edward, Jennifer handed him her business card with both hands and said with a smile, "Hello, Mr. Smith, I'm Jennifer. Nice to meet you."
Edward's expression was bland, and he didn't even look at her. Noah was the nearest to him and lit up his cigarette for him. Edward took a draw on his cigarette and looked snooty.
Jennifer flushed in an instant, and her expression kept changing. But she maintained a polite smile, took back her business card, nodded and whispered, "I'm sorry."
Of course, she was very awkward, but she was under a lot of pressure while facing Edward, so she wanted to leave as soon as possible. However, someone said to tease her, "Miss Baker, you're too hurried, aren't you? You give whoever you see your business card. Do you think Mr. Smith will accept anyone's business card?"
Another person chimed in with a smile, "Maybe you can replace your business card with a room card, and you can talk to Mr. Smith on another occasion."
Everyone laughed. Jennifer couldn't be more embarrassed. Just as everyone looked at her and she didn't know what to do, a familiar voice suddenly sounded behind her, "What a coincidence. Mr. Smith, you're here, too."
Jennifer turned around with a pale face. Sure enough, it was Jane.
Jane looked as calm and composed as usual, and she looked straight at Edward who was sitting on the sofa.
The group of worldly-wise people were not in a hurry to greet Jane. They looked her up and down first and then observed Edward's expression secretly. However, Edward was also looking at Jane. Although there was no obvious change in his expression, he replied to her, "What are you doing here? Do you own a sideline?"
Jane smiled and looked at Jennifer next to her. "It's not me. I came with my best friend. She opened a new media company and wants to learn from these seniors."
Edward answered to Jane, which made everyone have all kinds of ideas in their minds. Before Edward spoke, someone took the initiative to say, "So you're Mr. Smith's friend."
Noah even gave his seat to Jane and motioned for her to sit next to Edward.
