Chapter 213 Green With Envy
Justin Smith has moved to the city, which can be considered to be beneficial to Jane Cooper. As it reduces the two-hour round trip drive every day and allows her to squeeze in another class.
The only downside is that as Justin moves closer, Jane will inevitably live in the same neighbourhood as Edward Smith. It will inevitably have more contact with him. Of course, these concerns were only Jane's personal 'prejudices'. She privately felt that Edward was difficult to get along with and that she should not be in intimate contact with him. But when they did come into contact, there was nothing wrong with it.
The two of them occasionally run into each other in the neighbourhood, at most saying hello. Edward didn't take the initiative, and she didn't pester him. When Aaron Hunter was not available on the weekends, Justin would occasionally call on Edward to fill in. Including Henry Perez, the four of them played football, basketball and table tennis.
Jane was still very wary and quite hesitant to go out to dinner with Edward. Not because she thinks he is not good, but there is no need to get too close, it is not good to let others misunderstand.
The fact that Edward never asked her out to dinner in private, nor did he ever show the slightest hint of ambiguity or even intimacy, was what made Jane feel safe.
It's the end of the year and the company was consolidating staff results and announcing the list for this year's annual meeting. S City is a new company. It was only established the year before last. Everyone was looking forward to this opportunity to make a name for themselves and meet some great peers and expand their circles.
Charles Lee and Sofia Moore were the only ones who were aware of the list. Everyone had a sneaking suspicion that the "oldies" who attended the annual meeting last year would definitely attend there this year. But as for how many new people could be added and who the new people were, that was the focus of the discussion.
Many people assumed that there must be a seat for Jane, after all, she has been so 'prominent' in the past six months. Just saying who her current clients are is enough to make people's jaws drop.
But others said, "She had a street fight with someone before. The company has punished her internally, so how could they let a newcomer with a bad record join them last year?"
"She's so close to the big boss, it's not just a matter of the big boss saying a word?"
"The big boss is quite fair in his dealings with people, there's no need to ruin his reputation for Jane, right?"
Mary Johnson listened for half a day, looked down and played with her nails, and said meaningfully, "I think you all think wrongly. We ordinary people have no power and no influence, whether we can go depends on the arrangement of the big boss. Is Jane an ordinary person? She can go or not, depending on whether she wants to go or not. She can beg the big boss, if the big boss feels difficult, there are two big clients behind her. Do you think that the big boss can still not sell this face if anyone from Edward Smith and Vincent Perez says a word?"
The first thing that happened was that everyone was silent. Those who were already displeased with Jane now felt that she was an eyesore.
Mary sighed, "Don't be sour. She is lucky and has the means to enlist people."
Someone whispered, "What good fortune, it's her pretty face, right?"
People can disparage a person by just imagining it. Although they think that Jane is on the list of the annual meeting, at the bottom of their hearts they still hope that she won't go or can't go. People are like this because they are born with the viciousness of "desire for the demise."
One morning, when everyone came to work, they suddenly received an internal email announcing the list of this year's annual meeting. Not only Jane Cooper but also Aaron Hunter was listed.
The number of attendees at the yearly meeting is unrestricted. But this year's list does not include Evelyn Davis or another senior who was on it last year. Not to mention the people involved, and even the colleagues around them feel that Jane and Aaron are taking the places of others. Even though they have outstanding performance.
Jane and Evelyn had a confrontation. A nosy person said, "It's obvious that Jane took your place, what does she mean? You've been working hard for a whole year. You're not as good as her who's been here for less than six months, are you kidding?"
"That's right, she does have good performance. But she's been punished. A prick who just came to the company and caused trouble can still go to year's meeting, who believes that there's nothing fishy in it?"
"Evelyn, I don't know what you think, but if this were on me anyway, I would never get over it. It's just blatant bullying."
Evelyn has not spoken to Jane for a long time. Even though they work together, the two hardly ever interact. They almost do not see each other. They can entirely treat each other as air even though they can see each other. She believed Jane had once publicly humiliated her. They can disregard it. Who would have thought that Jane would have cheated and taken her place now?
If there were no agitators around, she would just lose it. But everyone said so, and in a moment of brain fever, she couldn't resist knocking on Sofia's door.
"Come on in."
At the end of the year, Sofia was also very busy and asked without raising her head, "What is it?"
Evelyn said with a tense expression, "Miss Moore, tell me the truth, is it because of Jane that I couldn't attend the annual meeting?"
Hearing the words, Sofia moved slightly, then raised her head, "Who told you that?"
Evelyn said, "It's obvious to all, Am I not as good as her or work not as long as she is? If we all made mistakes this year, I'm not the only one who made mistakes. Her mistakes are even more outrageous than mine. And it's widely known, so why did she get to go to the annual meeting?"
Sofia wanted to say but also looked meaningful, silent for a moment, out of the voice, "This matter is not I alone can do. To be honest, before I know the criteria for judging whether a staff member is excellent. But now, I am also unclear."
She deliberately made it sound vague and inescapable, which reinforced Evelyn's thoughts. She frowned and said, "Is it just because Jane is close to the big boss, or because her clients are not ordinary people?"
Sofia said, "If you ask me, who am I going to ask? Right here in this office, I told Jane to pay attention to her relationship with her colleagues. What did she say? She said she had backing, she could do whatever she wanted, it was out of my hands."
Evelyn choked for a moment. She had come here to argue against Sofia, who expected Jane wouldn't behave herself even in front of Sofia.
Sofia gave Evelyn a helpless look, "Reason doesn't make sense to someone like her. I won't lie to you. I expect her to play with fire every day. If she doesn't have someone behind her, she dares to run roughshod over the company?"
When Evelyn heard this, her heart turned to evil thoughts. Regarding how not to ask Jane to get into trouble, to set herself on fire, if not to be kicked by the client, at least to make a scandal. So that she doesn't have the face to the annual meeting.
The day after the incident, Evelyn suddenly received an anonymous email. She opened it, it contained dozens of photos. She clicked on one at random.
The woman in the picture only showed the top of her head, it was impossible to see her face. But when the photo was zoomed in, the man's face was visible, and it turned out to be Edward Smith.
Evelyn didn't blink and held her breath as she looked at all the photos in succession, including not only the one of Edward and Jane playing on the field but also the two of them in the underground garage, getting out of the car together. Jane was with empty hands and Edward was carrying several bags.
Why would he be so pampered with her if their connection was only one of a client and tutor?
