Chapter 40: Reminded Her
Edward was not interested in the dishes before him. He didn't eat them. Instead, he took a spoon and ate the cake.
Justin had been used to it. Jane couldn't help but glance at him, wondering why he could be so muscular by eating cakes.
She thought Edward didn't notice her, but he said expressionlessly, "Do you want to eat?"
With a guilty conscience, Jane looked up.
Edward was sleepy and looked lazy. He looked down slightly and said blandly, "Ask the cook to give you a cake."
Jane immediately shook her head, "No, thanks."
Sitting opposite her, Justin raised his head and said, "You were not looking at the cake, right? You were looking at Uncle Edward."
Jane looked at him and wanted to give him a lesson. Justin's eyes were provocative. He knew she didn't dare to do anything in front of Edward.
They glared at each other. Edward said, "There is no outsider here. You don't have to put on a show."
His voice was as bland as usual. Justin said, "Uncle Edward, be careful. She always asks me about you."
Jane said unhurriedly, "Justin, don't attack me because of our grudges in class, okay?"
Justin said, "Uncle Edward is an excellent man. Don't you like him?"
Indeed, it was hard to answer such a question in front of Edward. Jane felt that he was good at misleading Edward. She immediately lowered her voice and said, "You have to ask my boyfriend first."
Justin's eyes were suspicious, and he didn't quite believe Jane. Before he replied, Edward said again, "To let me have a girlfriend and to let you have a private teacher. Which one is more difficult?"
He said this to Justin. Although he didn't look unhappy, he was reminding him.
Justin pursed his lips. He was not scared, but he didn't refute.
Jane smiled and eased the atmosphere, "Mr. Smith, you don't have to take it seriously. I know Justin is kidding."
Edward stared at the cake with a focused look. He scooped up a strawberry on it, chewed it a few times, and said in a bland tone, "I have to take it seriously. Now, I only need a private teacher for him, and I don't want a girlfriend. Even if I want to be in a relationship, I won't be with my nephew's teacher. So, Miss Cooper, do your job well. Don't think too much."
He seemed to be comforting her. However, Jane thought about it carefully and knew that he was reminding her. Whether she liked him or not, she should behave herself, and he wouldn't be with her.
Jane smiled and said without any emotion, "I know. Mr. Smith, you can rest assured."
Anyway, he was not her type! He shouldn't think too much, either.
Edward came downstairs just to have lunch with Justin. After eating the cake, he went back to bed. The driver of the Smith family sent Jane back to Forward Education. On the way, Jennifer sent a message to Jane, saying that she received an invitation, and she could meet some big shots in the evening. She felt that her company was going to develop well.
Jane said, "Will you give me a treat when you succeed?"
Jennifer replied, "There are lots of fast-food restaurants near your company. Choose whichever you want."
Jane said, "Bye."
Jennifer sent her a pleading expression and then asked, "How's your work in the Smith family today? Is there any shocking news?"
Jane said, "Check our chat history. Aren't you tired of asking the same question every day?"
Jennifer said, "I'm just worried about you. After all, it's hard to get along with Edward."
Jane lowered her head and typed quickly, "Today, he reminded me euphemistically."
Jane immediately asked, "What did he say?"
Jane said, "He didn't want me to fall in love with him."
Jennifer sent her a laughing expression and typed, "I have to admit that he's handsome enough to worry about this, but he doesn't know that you're not interested in other men. You're a weird lady who has never been in a relationship. Many hot guys once chased after you. You're quite popular."
She said a lot, and Jane only asked, "A weird lady?"
Jennifer said, "Oh, I'm sorry. You cute lady."
Jane replied, "It's too late. I'll break up with you for one day. Bye."
The car stopped downstairs. Jane thanked the driver and got off. On the way to the company, her phone rang. The number on the screen was unfamiliar, but Jane remembered the end of the number. She once saw it on a business card.
After looking at it for a few seconds, she answered, "Hello?"
A woman's voice came from the phone, "Miss Cooper, this is me."
Jane said, "Miss Brown, what's the matter?"
Beth said, "As I told you before, I have an acquaintance who runs a media company. She will hold a private party tonight. A lot of big shots will attend it. I let her send an invitation to your friend. She'll go there. I'd like to ask you if you have time in the evening. If you're available, why don't you join us?"
Jane immediately thought of Jennifer. Jennifer thought it was a pie in the sky. But in fact, there was no such thing as a free lunch.
As soon as Beth finished speaking, Jane smiled and replied, "Thank you, Miss Brown. I'm available. I'll go with my friend."
Beth said, "You're welcome. Your friend knows the address. I'll wait for you in the evening."
Jane's smile faded when she hung up. Just as she was about to step forward, a familiar male voice sounded behind her, "Which Miss Brown?"
Jane turned around and had a look, "Why are you here?"
Aaron said, "My client is in the building opposite. I saw you as soon as I came down. Is that Beth?"
Jane said yes. Aaron said with displeasure, "Why did she call you?"
Jane told him everything truthfully. Aaron frowned, "She might have evil intentions, or she wants to rope you in. Since you know she has a purpose, why didn't you refuse her?"
Jane said, "Jennifer has agreed."
Aaron said, "Just tell her to refuse. Beth is scheming. Even if it's not a trap, she wants you to owe her a favor."
In Aaron's opinion, this was a very simple thing, but Jane said, "Beth is right. In S City, it's hard for us to develop without a wide range of contacts. Although Jennifer is a native and her father is a businessman, she can only start from scratch because this is a new field. You don't know how happy she was when she told me about the invitation."
Aaron opened his mouth, and Jane said, "I know what you want to say. I don't want to take advantage of either Edward or Beth. Now I have no choice. I've got involved. Beth regards me as her enemy. She knows that Edward once helped Jennifer. If I refuse her olive branch now, she'll do something to Jennifer even if she can't teach me a lesson."
This was why Beth mentioned Jennifer. To put it bluntly, Jane and Jennifer were both innocent. Edward used Jane to refuse Beth, while Beth used Jennifer to warn Jane.
She was not powerful here. How could everything be satisfactory? She and Jennifer both had difficulties. Jennifer had got a chance because of her, and she couldn't let her suffer a loss because of her.
