Chapter 37: Bewitching Words Or Olive Branch
As soon as he said this, Beth's smile froze.
Jane's heart sank. How could he say like that? She couldn't think of a good way to explain, and she was afraid that she would make matters worse, so she replied bluntly, "I didn't see it."
Edward said, "Perhaps I lost it on bed."
Jane acted as if she didn't hear it, picked up the tea cup and pretended to drink tea calmly. Justin said at this time, "Miss Cooper is partial."
Jane raised her head vigilantly. Justin looked innocent on the surface, but there was a trace of pleasure and provocation in his eyes.
Lewis asked, "Who does she shows partiality to?"
Justin complained, "She favours Uncle Edward more than me."
Jane thought, 'What an ungrateful brat! I clearly bought it for him. How could I know that Edward would... No, wait.'
What did Justin say? Uncle Edward?
Lewis's expression didn't change as he said with a smile, "Are you jealous of Miss Cooper or your Uncle Edward?"
Justin pursed his lips, "Uncle Edward hired Miss Cooper for me. However, he's closer to her."
Jane wished that she could get up and leave. Edward and Justin's acting skills were so good. Moreover, they were actually uncle and niece?
At this moment, she was really helpless, and she caught a glimpse of Beth's fake smile.
Edward remained self-composed, but Lewis said meaningfully, "Your uncle even dares to annoy you since I don't often come back. I'll help you today. Tell me. Do you want another uncle or another teacher?"
It was impossible to have another uncle. Beth thought for a second and looked at Justin while holding her breath. It seemed that what he was going to say was very important to her.
Justin looked at Jane with provocation and dissatisfaction in his intense eyes. Those were clearly both negative emotions, but what he said shocked Beth, "I don't want either of them to be replaced."
Beth looked away and adjusted her breathing secretly.
Lewis asked, "Why? Didn't you say Miss Cooper favoured Edward more than you?"
Edward said, "Great-grandpa, please stop casting a bone between Uncle Edward and me. You don't come back often, but I have to live in this house all the time."
Lewis said with a smile, "Is that so? You seem to be forced to say so."
Justin sighed and said fearlessly, "Love me, love my dog. Anyway, Uncle Edward likes Miss Cooper."
Edward glanced at him, "You talk too much."
They chimed in with each other, completely ignoring Jane's psychological endurance. She once studied psychology, but it didn't mean that she wouldn't get crazy when she was dealt a blow at.
Jane had made up her mind. If Lewis was dissatisfied with this and targeted her, she would tell him the truth. Although she didn't dare to offend Edward, she wouldn't be so silly as to speak for him in front of Lewis.
Sitting on the sofa for a long time, Jane had been waiting for Lewis to look at her, but Lewis had been talking to Justin. He only said to her and Beth at the dinner table, "Just make yourselves at home."
Jane nodded quickly. Beth was smiling. In fact, she was dissatisfied. In Lewis's eyes, she and Jane were both outsiders.
After the meal, Jane could finally leave. She said that she wanted to leave, and Beth immediately said, "I'm just going to the downtown area. I'll give her a ride."
Before Edward could speak, Lewis said, "That's good. Edward, chat with me this afternoon."
Edward guessed that Lewis deliberately kept him, so he looked at Jane and said, "Call me when you arrive at the company."
Jane had been uneasy this day, and now his words were another stimulus to her. She couldn't laugh, so she only nodded, said goodbye to Lewis and walked out.
Jane and Beth got into the same car. Beth drove out of the Smith family and headed for the downtown area. On the way, Jane sat quietly in the passenger seat and didn't speak. Beth, who was driving, suddenly said, "I always want to have a chance to talk to you face to face."
Jane knew what she meant, but she remained calm on the surface and turned to ask, "Miss Brown, what's the matter?"
Beth said without turning her head, "Eden is indeed my cousin, but the relationship between our families is a little distant, and I have no contact with him. Last time, Edward let us meet because he wanted to solve this matter in front of me. What Eden did has nothing to do with me. One of his legs is broken, and he asked for it. Now he is still lying in the hospital. I don't know if he'll have any sequelae in the future."
Jane said frankly, "It's good that the problem has been solved. I'm not a policewoman, and I don't doubt people without evidence."
Jane smiled faintly and said, "No wonder Edward thinks highly of you. You're not meddlesome."
Jane said, "I don't know if Mr. Smith thinks highly of me. Even if he does, it's because I'm Justin's private teacher."
Beth said, "Since Justin is obedient to you, you're indeed capable. Many of my friends and acquaintances have children, and they want to hire a reliable private teacher. Why don't I introduce them to you?"
Jane smiled blandly, "Thank you, Miss Brown, but now I don't have any extra time."
Beth said, "Do you despise my friends or me?"
Her voice was as usual, but her words were sharp.
Jane didn't panic and replied politely, "Of course I don't mean to despise you or your friends. As a private teacher, I always habitually explain my recent arrangements because I don't want to waste anyone's time."
Beth said, "Don't be in a hurry to refuse me. One more friend is one more way. What's more, you haven't worked here for a long time. Maybe you'll need my help one day."
Jane said, "Okay, thank you."
Beth said, "You just need to teach Justin well. In the future, you will have a bright future in S City, and so will your friends... I heard you had a friend who ran a media company?"
Jane was very sensitive, and she didn't like Beth investigating her friends behind her back.
"Yes." She only answered one word.
Beth said casually, "I have many friends in this circle. I can introduce her to them when I have time."
Jane said, "Thank you, but there's no need. She doesn't want to owe anyone a favor. She can develop her business slowly."
Beth said, "She can even owe Edward a favor. Why can't she accept my help? You come from Y City, so you should understand. If you don't have a wide range of contacts, it will be hard for you to develop in big cities like Y City and S City. Most of the time, working hard for ten years is not as good as having a powerful friend. How many decades can you waste in your life?"
"I guess you must be thinking that there is no such thing as a free lunch. Why should I help you? In fact, the reason is very simple. You are chosen by Edward. I trust his discernment and I am willing to help you more. If you have a bright future, Edward will thank me."
To be honest, Jane admired Beth's adaptability. When she thought Jane was easy to bully, she threatened Jane. However, she found that Jane was not someone to be trifled with, so she immediately decided to conciliate her.
With a beautiful smile, Jane replied, "Miss Brown, you really care about Mr. Smith. He will thank you sooner or later."
Jane said, "Men mature later than women. I'm willing to give him time. Facts will tell him what kind of woman he really needs."
