Chapter 68

Chapter 68
Vanessa called Valeria back immediately.
Although it was late, Valeria couldn't sleep safely. "This is Shawn Yeats" was still lingering in her ears.
When she picked up Vanessa's phone, she didn't know what to say but could only say, "You finally finished your shower."
Vanessa, "It's so late. What happened?"
"You're so impatient!" Valeria snorted coldly, "I wonder if you will go home during the May holiday."
Vanessa glanced at Shawn next to her and said in a low voice, "I know what you want to do."
Talian was a tourist city, so it was difficult to buy a bus ticket to Talian during vacations, and it would be very crowded. Therefore, Vanessa reached an agreement with her parents that she would not go home on holiday.
Obviously, Valeria asked for another purpose.
Valeria, "It's not important. Just tell me if you're going home."
Vanessa didn't answer her. Instead, she covered the phone screen and took a few glances at Shawn.
Shawn leaned against the head of the bed, flipped the magazine in his hand, and also glanced at her.
"What's the matter?"
To cover up her embarrassment, Vanessa raised her chin and cleared her throat. "Are you free for your May holiday?"
"No."
The voice of turning pages came together with Shawn's short answer, "But I can rearrange it."
Vanessa couldn't help kicking him. "Can you say a complete sentence next time?"
Then she turned back to him and released her hand covering the cell phone screen, "I see. There have been a lot of things recently. If I'm not busy, I'll go home. I'll inform you then."
However, what she said became true. A week before the holiday, things suddenly flooded like a flood.
Vanessa was so busy that she even called Sophia to help her.
When Valeria called again, Vanessa didn't have time to put on the headset. She put the phone on her shoulder and clamped it with her chin, "I'm really not coming back. I've been swamped recently. We're going to have the mid-year examination soon, so I really don't have time."
Valeria said impatiently, "All right, go and be busy. You've really grown up."
After hanging up, Vanessa quickly forgot about the conversation with her mother.
The last day of the May holiday was Vanessa's only rest day of the holiday. Shawn was on business abroad and would come back in the evening. She didn't want to go anywhere alone today. Thus, after lying at home all afternoon, she suddenly wanted to cook.
Although she and Shawn usually didn't cook, nannies would come to cook for them on time every day, so there would always be fresh ingredients in the refrigerator.
The materials were complete, but whether Vanessa could turn the ingredients into a complete dinner was uncertain.
Two hours later, the refrigerator was empty. However, only three dishes were successfully cooked.
"Not bad."
Vanessa took off her apron and said to herself, "What a sensual dinner! Shawn, you're so lucky to have a girlfriend like me."
Edison failed to do the bulb experiment more than 1600 times, so it was okay that she failed to cook a dish six times.
Only she disdained to tell the world how hard she had worked.
When setting up the dishes and chopsticks, footsteps came from the door.
Vanessa happily wiped her hands to greet Shawn.
"Welcome home!"
However, her last tone suddenly changed from surprise to shock.
Because it was not only Shawn who appeared at the door but also her mother, Valeria.
Vanessa didn't even close her mouth. She was stunned for three seconds before she could speak again.
"Mom?"
"Why?" Valeria took a suitcase and walked forward two steps, "We haven't seen each other for months. Have you forgotten me?"
It was her mother's tone.
Vanessa finally calmed down, gave Shawn a resentful look, and then went to help Valeria with her luggage.
"How did you come together?"
"We met at the airport."
Just when Vanessa wondered how they knew each other, Shawn took the suitcase from her hand. At this time, he smelled a smell and asked, "Did you cook?"
Vanessa nodded.
When Shawn took the suitcase and left, she whispered, "Mom, why didn't you tell me you were coming?"
Valeria, "Is it still called surprise inspection if I informed you in advance?"
Vanessa was speechless.
Her mother was really a senior head teacher.
She pointed to Shawn. "Have you met before? How can you come together?"
Vanessa couldn't believe that her mother and her boyfriend recognized each other at the airport without any introduction.
Shawn relied on the similar appearance of Valeria and Vanessa, while Valeria relied on Shawn's face, which was no different from it in the photo.
"We haven't met before." Valeria put her arms around her chest and silently observed Vanessa's living environment. "I recognized him at the airport, greeted him, then we came here together."
With that, she turned back and squinted at Vanessa, "You didn't tell me that you two have lived together."
"You didn't tell me about your trip to Singapore in my senior year." Vanessa muttered in a low voice, "You just told me you were going to the countryside."
Valeria was speechless.
As soon as Shawn came out, they immediately stopped the topic.
Valeria became the kind Mrs. Capell again.
Thinking that they had come from the airport together, Vanessa couldn't help wondering what they had talked about on the way. In short, there was no embarrassment that she had expected now.
But after all, it was the first time they met. Valeria looked at Shawn with a critical eye.
Until the dishes were served and she took a few bites, the examination in her eyes turned into pity.
"Do you usually eat these?" Valeria paused, "Forget it. It's healthier than takeout."
Her words extinguished Chef Green's confidence.
"No."
Shawn said calmly, "I usually cook."
Valeria nodded with satisfaction. "Good. Don't be too tired."
Shawn, "I enjoy it."
Vanessa was speechless.
He had only cooked a meal once in all. Why was he so shameless?
Although the sudden appearance of Valeria caught Vanessa off guard, they hadn't seen each other for months, and Vanessa missed her mom very much.
Besides, Vanessa was very moved that she came so far to meet her.
After dinner, Valeria said she felt good and relieved to see Shawn. She had to rush back to Talian in the evening for tomorrow's class.
Vanessa almost cried at the thought of her mother being in such a hurry.
Shawn, however, looked at her with a half-smile.
How could he still laugh on such an occasion?
People were always prone to lose reason when they were emotional.
When Valeria was about to leave, Vanessa hugged her for a while and reluctantly took her to the station.
Until Valeria left, Vanessa still looked at the station sentimentally.
After a while, her mood gradually calmed down. After returning to the car, she finally recovered and looked at Shawn, "But why did you meet at the airport?"
This was a good question.
Talian was a small city without an airport. When Valeria came to see her, she shouldn't have first appeared at Lantrie International Airport.
Shawn held the steering wheel and pursed his lips, but he couldn't hide the smile in his eyes.
"Answer me!"
Vanessa shook his arm. "Didn't you come back from France? How did you meet at the airport?"
"Because," Shawn said the hurtful words in a gentle tone, "she has just returned from a trip to Malaysia and will transfer to the high-speed rail in Lantrie to return to Talian."
Vanessa was speechless.
In short, all her sorrow was in vain.

She took a breath, holding back all her tears.
"Go home."
There was no spring in Lantrie. After only a few days of cooling in May, the temperature soared to 95 degrees Fahrenheit. The temperature continued to rise until June.
The air conditioning in the office building was turned on, making many girls covered with blankets during the lunch break.
In the silence, Sophia heard the sound of the keyboard. She looked up in s daze and asked, "Don't you rest?"
Vanessa typed quickly. "I'm adjusting the PowerPoint."
Sophia, "What PowerPoint?"
Vanessa looked around and whispered, "My work report."
Although her colleagues were well aware of her promotion, Vanessa still held the principle that she couldn't be high-profile.
Otherwise, what if her hope failed.
Sophia was very interested. She watched for a while and sighed again.
Vanessa asked her, "What's the matter with you?"
Sophia propped her head with her hands and said weakly, "I think Lonn's ideal girlfriend should be a woman like you."
"Shh." Vanessa told her to shut up, "Don't say this in front of your little uncle. It will kill me."
Sophia laughed, "Yes. He's very stingy."
When she was about to finish working, Vanessa asked again, "Why do you say that?"
"You know, last time I had an accident, he came to the hospital."
Sophia held her face in her hands and looked at the computer blankly. "I was so ashamed at that time, wasn't I?"
Remembering Sophia's angry scolding of the driver that day, Vanessa couldn't help laughing.
"In fact, it was not a shame. I think you did the right thing. No matter who he is, he should take responsibility for his own behavior."
"Yes!"
Sophia slapped the table excitedly. "I asked him if he thought I was too fussy, and he said the same."
Vanessa sipped her coffee and didn't answer.
"I just read your work report and think you are the one who is responsible for yourself. I'm just a loafer."
She sighed again as if she had lost hope for the future, "But the more I can't get it, the more I want it. What should I do?"
Vanessa, "Is he so cold to you?"
Sophia was stunned for a moment, suddenly blushed, and lowered her head silently.
"He's not very cold."
Once she went to a friend's party and met Lonn in a bar.
By the dim light, she stared at Lonn blatantly.
However, he left a few minutes later and never came back.
Sophia drank a lot of wine gloomily; it was almost midnight when she left.
But when she got to the bar's door, she found Lonn sitting in the car.
He took her home that night.
Although more than a month had passed, Sophia still clearly remembered the scene of that night. She kicked him carelessly when he helped her take off her high heels.
Then he held her ankle.
The warmth and the rough touch of his palm rushed into her heart at the same time, making her suddenly become like a puppet.
But only she became stiff. Lonn put her legs on the sofa and asked politely, as usual, "Is there anything else I can do for you?"
Sophia still wanted to slap herself in retrospect.
She didn't know why she would answer, "My underwear is too tight and uncomfortable."
Why didn't she lose her memory after getting drunk?
While Sophia quietly recalled this embarrassing experience, Vanessa had finished modifying the report. She pulled out the USB flash drive and patted her on the shoulder.
"I'm going to the conference room to debug. Let's talk later."
Sophia, "Good luck!"
There were still 20 minutes before the report began.
In addition to Vanessa, another colleague with a job promotion was also preparing in the conference room.
Seeing her coming in, the male colleague stopped what he was doing and said with a smile, "Congratulations, Deputy Editor Green."
Vanessa was not familiar with him, so she felt a little embarrassed to hear his congratulations.
"The process is not over yet. Don't call me that. I'll be laughed at by others later."
"There will be no accident. This is a matter of certainty, Deputy Editor Green."
Though he said so, he turned his head and sneered.
He joined the magazine a year earlier than Vanessa, but he was still working hard for the position of a team leader now, while Vanessa was about to become the deputy editor-in-chief.
People who thought they had talent but were wasted would ignore others' efforts.
He only knew that the difference between him and Vanessa was that he didn't have a great lover.
In his mind, being the deputy editor-in-chief was just the beginning. Vanessa would no longer be at the same level as those who needed to search for information resources themselves.
She had a boyfriend at the top of the pyramid in the industry, so no matter who she wanted to interview in the future, it would be a piece of cake.
However, people like him still had to experience all kinds of difficulties for an interview and even often suffer from cold shoulders. Now, as long as Vanessa wanted to, let alone an interview, even if she wanted to have dinner with a big shot in the industry, her boyfriend could arrange it for her right away.
"Editor Green, don't forget our old colleagues."
At this time, the man showed a complimenting smile, "Don't refuse us when we need your help in the future."
His words were full of jealousy, making Vanessa could only cope politely.
After a while, the leaders came in one after another.
Zoie patted Vanessa on the shoulder as she passed by.
"Don't be nervous. Just do as usual. There will be no problem."
Zoie's words gave Vanessa great confidence.
With her encouragement, Vanessa's whole reporting process was very smooth. Her eyes were shining, and the delicate PowerPoint behind her became only her background.
When she put down the pen, the meeting room was filled with applause.
"Is it over?"
As soon as Vanessa came out, Tracy and Sophia couldn't wait to ask her. "How's it going?"
The air conditioner in the office was efficient. She blew on the air conditioner for a while to calm down and said calmly, "Not bad. No accident happened."
Tracy and Sophia said simultaneously, " Let's have a party."
Vanessa made a victory gesture. "Tomorrow night! You choose the place."
After returning to her seat, Vanessa picked up her pen and was about to write a weekly summary. However, she didn't write anything for a long time.
She stared blankly at the bright sun outside the window.
Ten minutes had passed when she looked at the computer again.
She smiled. At this time, even the weekly summary she hated the most became not hateful. She wrote it very fast.
Two hours later, Vanessa raised her head and casually leaned back in the chair. With a calm expression, she sent Shawn three exclamation marks in a row.
"It's my treat tonight. You can choose any place you like. Chief Editor Green is happy today!" said Vanessa.
After a while, Shawn finally had time to read the messages.
He replied to her with a voice message.
"How about Emerald Garden?"
Vanessa smiled, "No problem. Chief Editor Green will cook for you."
However, an email popped up on her computer screen when the message was sent out.
She clicked it immediately. The moment she saw the content, her eyes froze on the screen.
She thought she had seen it wrong, so she blinked her eyes and read it word by word carefully.
Like falling from the sky, Vanessa felt weightless all over her body. Even the sunshine by the window suddenly disappeared with her mood change.
Then she immediately withdrew the message to Shawn.
"Dinner is canceled. Your girlfriend is upset now," said Vanessa.
