Chapter 037 A Call from Those Shameless Relatives
"Grandma is sick. It's liver cancer. Fortunately, it's in the early stage."
Oliver said on the phone, "The doctor suggested that she should have been hospitalized in the hospital in the city. You and Leila have settled down in the city. You know the situation in the city well. So, go make an appointment for Grandma. And you should make arrangements for us. We will set out later to send Grandma to the hospital in the city."
"So that grandma can be admitted to the hospital as soon as she arrives. I heard that the hospital will need the patient to pay a deposit. Don't forget to pay the deposit as well. Although your parents are dead, you and Leila have the shared responsibility to take care of them. You two never give any payment to our grandparents these years. You and your sister should pay for Grandma's treatments, as the alimony you two should have paid these years."
Hearing Oliver's arrangement, Teresa's face fell.
She had lost her parents at the age of ten. The compensation for her parents' death was a total of $200,000. And it made sense that her grandparents would want to take a share. After all, Astra and Robert Heller were her father's biological parents. But her shameless grandparents had taken away far more than they deserved.
She knew that after her grandparents took $100,000 from the compensation, they shared the money with their children. Her father, Andrew, had two elder brothers, one junior brother, and two sisters. Each of his brothers received $20,000, while the two sisters got $10,000 each. And the rest was her grandparents' money to support themselves when they were old.
She was young at the time. But at the age of ten, she could remember things.
She still remembered Astra and Robert saying in front of all the villagers and her mother Emma's family that they would not need her and her sister to support them in the future. They had signed an agreement. Her grandparents, her uncles, and she and Leila all pressed their fingerprints on the agreement.
The agreement was in triplicate. One for Teresa and Leila, one for Astra and Robert, and one for the village committee.
There were so many witnesses. And now Oliver was accusing her and her sister of not paying alimony!
After she and Leila lost their parents, no relatives were willing to adopt them. Astra and Robert took away $100,000 from their compensation. Her mother's family took away $80,000 forcefully. She and her sister, the biological children of Andrew and Emma Heller, were left with only $20,000.
Leila was only fifteen then. After taking care of her parents' funeral, Leila sent Teresa to a boarding school. At least, she knew her little sister would have a good study atmosphere and food to eat at school. And her little sister didn't have to struggle under those relatives' noses.
This was how Leila and Teresa grew up together.
Those so-called relatives took away Leila and Teresa's money. But they never lent a hand when the two girls were in need. And when Leila was about to get married, dozens of them came and demanded $50,000 from Patrick, or they would not let Leila get married.
They felt so reasonable with such a shameless deed.
Now that Astra was sick, they wanted to make Leila and Teresa pay for the medical bills. Teresa wasn't surprised at all.
"Mr. Heller, I remember you are 12 years older than me. Fifteen years ago, when my parents died in a car accident, you were already twenty-two years old. You were very active when your grandparents wanted to take a share of my parents' compensation. Don't you remember that Leila's and my alimony to our grandparents had long been settled in one lump sum?"
"Your family built a new house with the $20,000 that Astra and Robert gave to your family. They took away $100,000 in the name of the cost of supporting themselves. Every penny of that money was all the alimony they took away from us. You enjoyed the money my parents gave their lives for. And you have the nerve to accuse me of not paying alimony? And you even have the guts to ask me for money?"
Twenty thousand dollars was a lot of money fifteen years ago. It could build a very nice house.
"Well, I forget, you guys are shameless. How could you feel embarrassed? Oliver Heller, I'm telling you, I won't take this sh*t!"
After saying that, Teresa hung up the phone.
When Oliver called again, she blacklisted his number.
Hubert heard all the conversations Teresa had with her cousin. He hadn't investigated her origin and past. But he had heard from his grandmother that Teresa's parents had been killed in a car accident when she was ten years old. Since then, Teresa and Leila had lived on the little compensation money left to finish their education.
No one could judge her for being close to her sister.
They were the only support to each other for more than ten years. How could they not be close?
In Teresa's heart, Leila was the only family she had in this world.
It seemed that he had to have someone investigate her past.
Teresa didn't tell Hubert about the Heller family. Hubert did not ask.
The couple finished their breakfast in silence. Later, Hubert sent Teresa to work.
Seeing the couple go downstairs together, the group of bodyguards waiting downstairs melted away immediately and pretended to be passersby.
Teresa saw several luxury cars parked downstairs. Seeing that one of them was a Rolls-Royce, she said to Hubert, "I know our neighborhood is high-class. But I didn't expect to see a Rolls-Royce here."
'Those who can afford such expensive luxury cars should be living in a big villa.'
'Why would those people come to live here? Could it be that this neighborhood is convenient for their office or their kids' school?'
She didn't understand the world of rich people.
Hubert nodded, "Many people are super rich but low-key."
Teresa thought to herself, 'How could anyone drive a Rolls-Royce to be called low-key?'
Hubert drove his wife to work in his Chevrolet commercial vehicle with a calm demeanor.
After he left, the bodyguards gathered and looked at each other.
Finally, they all agreed that they should drive and follow their Young Master secretly. And when Young Master dropped off Young Madam, they could pick up Young Master and take him to the office.
Teresa didn't know that the man next to her was a super-rich man but acted low-key. He had so many fancy cars but he deliberately drove her to work with this Chevrolet, which was worth $20000.
She called Leila and told her that Astra was sick and the Heller family would send her to the hospital in the city to be hospitalized. She told Leila not to be so kind as to really pay for the medical bills.
Although she and Leila did not go back to their hometown for many years, they knew that those uncles and aunts were living good lives. And those cousins were working or doing business. She heard that their incomes were all good.
Astra and Robert had so many filial sons and grandsons. They were only outcasted girls. There was no reason to let them pay the bills.
Leila was five years older than Teresa. She knew more than Teresa did. And she hated them deeper than Teresa did.
Hearing Teresa's words, Leila sneered, "Not to mention that I don't have money now. Even if I did, there's no way I'd pay for that old woman's medical bills. Teresa, don't answer their calls anymore. Blacklist all their numbers."
"These people are vultures. Once you give in, you will never get rid of them."
She knew this too well.
"Leila, I've already blacklisted him."
Leila gave a "hmm" and felt a little more relaxed.
The good thing was that the Heller family didn't know their current address.
Before she got married, she didn't live in this place. Before she got married, the Heller family went to her old address once to ask for money. She kicked them out. She thought that they wouldn't dare to come to her again at will.
"Teresa, ask Hubert to come over for dinner tonight."
Teresa took a glance at Hubert and asked him, "My sister wants to invite us for dinner tonight. Do you have time tonight?"
"Since your sister has invited us, I'll make my time. Just tell her I'd love to go."
Hubert misunderstood Teresa last night, which led to a little fight between them. Hubert had wronged Teresa. So, he was especially nice today and gave Teresa more patience.
