Chapter 168 Insinuating Her for Not Being Likable
Jane did not know why Edward had suddenly come over. When he began chatting with Ellie, Jane was more confused about the purpose of his visit. Fortunately, the atmosphere was good. Ellie had an ability: whoever it was or whatever temper they had, if she brought them over, they would be gentle to her.
It was wrong to think that beautiful women were easygoing. Jane didn't think she herself was ugly, but she had not had the experience of being viewed with special respect by Edward. In a word, for an employer recruiting workers, what he more valued was not the face, but the character.
Edward finished the cake the size of a palm on his plate in a few moments. Seeing that, Jane quietly rose and cut another piece for him without asking him whether he wanted more or not. But when she put the new plate before him, Edward said, "Thank you."
Ellie said, "Since you like cakes, I'll make one for you alone tomorrow."
Edward said with a small smile, "Don't bother. You just got here. Have a rest, and enjoy your time for a few days."
Ellie said, "It won't bother. I'm a dexterous and diligent person. I feel uneasy when I have nothing to do."
Edward smiled, "I can see that."
Ellie said, "I do know you have sharp eyes."
Speechless, Jane wanted to massage her forehead so much. In S City, only those who were ignorant dared to talk to Edward like this.
During their chat, Edward answered a call from Vincent. "Where have you gone?"
Edward simply answered, "Okay, I'll hang up."
Vincent did not know what was going on. As for Edward, after finishing the cake on the plate, he raised his wine glass and said to Ellie, "Thank you for your hospitality. The cake was very delicious."
The two of them each drank a glass of wine, and Edward got up and said, "You keep chatting. I've got to go."
Jane went outside to see him off. As soon as she closed the door, she could not wait to say, "Mr. Smith, my little aunt is always... much too hospitable to people. Please don't take it to heart."
Edward had known Jane for four months, but when he found that she was still talking to him politely and prudently, he could not help but say, "I didn't feel anything improper. She was nice."
Jane made efforts to smile, but Edward said, "Your little aunt has a better character than you do."
Jane said, "... Yes, she's lively."
After saying the word "lively", Jane did want to punch herself a couple of times. No matter what, she was a graduate of a prestigious university. Although she had been majoring in science, she had some knowledge of wording, didn't she? Ah, she made her alma mater ashamed!
As expected, Edward said without showing his emotions, "But why are you so deep-minded? Who have you inherited this disposition from?"
Jane paused for an instant. Previously, Edward could not be bothered to care about her. They didn't agree with each other, so they simply didn't talk to each other. Yet, since some time ago, they had occasionally begun chatting with each other, but Edward had always set verbal traps for her on purpose.
After looking up at his eyes, Jane lowered her eyes and whispered, "My little aunt is not my mother... Some people are born not lively."
Edward found that she was not born dull, but that she was not lively in front of him. If she were dull, how could she have sung a song to Justin?
He should stop thinking about it. Anyway, he didn't have to argue with her about this. What was the point of exposing it? To force her to be a little livelier before him?
"Your little aunt came over this time to celebrate your birthday?"
Edward changed the subject.
Jane nodded yes.
Edward asked, "How many days will she stay ?"
Jane answered, "It's up to her plan. I want her to stay with me for a few days."
Edward said, "You won't have to give Justin lessons these days. Go keep your family company."
Jane shook her head and said, "It's unnecessary..."
Edward said, "You let her stay in your place, but you go to work. Then who did she come to visit? Your apartment?"
Jane did not know what to say. Unexpectedly, Edward had taught her something.
Not smiling, Edward said, "Your little aunt is a good woman. Her cake was nice to eat. I gave you a few days off only because of her. You don't have to thank me. Just ask someone to bring me more cakes."
After saying that, he turned around to leave. Being not stupid, Jane knew that he finally showed his care about her, so she shouted to his back, "Thank you, Mr. Smith."
But Edward did not look back, making him a very cool man.
Back to the private room, Jane sat with the others for a while. After dinner, she went to pay the bill with the others, but the restaurant cashier said with a smile, "Your bill has been paid."
Jane immediately looked at Jennifer and Aaron, but both of them shook their heads. Then she looked at Ellie, who was talking to Henry and Justin. Hearing her voice, Ellie looked up and said, "Not me. You said I wouldn't have to spend a penny in S City."
Then she stared at Henry and Justin, and Justin said, "Don't look at us! We haven't been out of the room until now."
Thus, Jane had to ask the cashier who had paid the bill, and the cashier answered, "The No. 202 guest paid the bill. Miss Cooper, happy birthday."
Jane had not expected that someone had paid the bill. For an instant, she was thinking if she needed to go upstairs to thank the person, but she had made herself so ashamed earlier, so she felt too embarrassed to go. While she was hesitating, Justin said, "Let's go. Today is your birthday. It's normal for them to have paid the bill, isn't it?"
Ellie said smilingly, "I like such things. He's surely a powerful boss."
Jane suddenly blushed and looked away. Simply wanting to quickly separate Ellie, she did not go upstairs, and the group of people went out of the restaurant.
The Smith family and the Perez family had sent cars to pick up Henry and Justin. Jane saw them get into the cars and waved goodbye.
Ellie and Jennifer held their arms, standing not far away. The former muttered, "Both of them are children of rich families!"
Jennifer said, "That's right! I've even never ridden in a Maybach."
Ellie said poker-faced, "Do we have to ask them to send us home first?"
Jennifer could not help but laugh. As she laughed, she said, "I thought about it a long time earlier, but Jane has been stopping me from saying it."
Aaron said, "I've guessed you don't like my car. Let's go. Go home by taxi."
They hailed a taxi by the roadside. Aaron sat in the front seat, and the three ladies were in the back seats. The taxi would go to Jennifer's home first.
On the way, Ellie said, "I think Edward is nice. He is not so unpopular as he is said to be, is he?"
As soon as she finished that, the chauffeur glanced through the rear-view mirror at the back seats. Jane instantly squeezed Ellie's hand, and Jennifer also began making up stories, "You think he's that most famous Edward in S City? The one you met today is my schoolmate. His family is a little rich, and he's somewhat arrogant, but he is generally good."
Jane also reminded her, "Little aunt, the name Edward is sensitive in S City. Don't bring it up so casually."
Ellie said, "The one I spoke of is your schoolmate. Who is the one you girls are talking about?"
The three of them were working to cover up the truth, and the chauffeur stopped looking back. The taxi went to Jennifer's place first, then to Rhine Garden, and Jane and her aunt finally got out of the taxi. Only after the chauffeur drove the taxi away did Ellie ask curiously, "The whole city knows Edward?"
Jane answered, "What do you think? Maybe some of your words will be spread to his ears."
Ellie said, "I didn't talk ill of him. If I had known what I said could be spread to his ears, you girls shouldn't have interrupted me. I would have praised him more so that he would be nicer to you in the future."
Jane looked helpless. "Being nicer or even nice is unnecessary. You just keep quiet, and I'll be thankful."
