Chapter 109 Hit the Soft Spot
They were not edging him out, but Jane was really not a romantic person. At least when it came to whether to set free or eat after hard fishing, she absolutely would choose the latter.
Originally, the reason Vincent arranged this meal was to feel Jane out and saw her reaction after knowing that the mole was found. Unexpectedly, it seemed that Edward was more attracted to her.
Vincent's nightlife started after dinner. Knowing that Jane would not let him drive her home, he didn't ask her if she need a ride and left first after saying goodbye to them.
Edward said to Jane, "Get in."
Jane refused as she always did. "No thanks. I can take a taxi."
Edward said, "I'm driving that way, and also I have something to tell you."
Hearing what he said, Jane had no choice but to get in the car. Then one of them was driving and the other one was sitting in the passenger seat. Jane asked him as she buckled up. As if she was afraid that he did this with a purpose.
The more Edward was with her, the more he appreciated her alienation. One could fake it a few times, but when she had done it many times, that meant she was truly vigilant.
Being vigilant was better than being silly.
Fortunately, he was not going to hit on her, but really had something to tell. "Something bad might happen these days. And if you don't mind, I can arrange a few people to be by your side. They won't invade your privacy and you know, just for protection."
How smart Jane was! She turned her head and asked, "Because of Miss Brown?"
Edward wasn't distracted. "It's me. Call me if you have any problems."
He had always been strict and fair when dealing with things. And when Jane always got sucked into the drama because of him, he just waited for her to ask him for help. So that he could pay back the debt.
Jane didn't refuse him directly, and said, "No problem. It's up to you."
The hotel was very close to the Rhine Garden, and it was just around the corner. Edward pulled over in front of the community, and then Jane unbuckled the seat belt and got out of the car.
"Thank you, Mr. Smith."
Edward said, "Thank you for the cake."
They simply said goodbye and went back respectively. Jane was relaxed and only regarded it as a normal social engagement. The only thing she remembered was the tasty Sakura squirrel mandarin fish in that restaurant, thinking that she could take Justin and Henry there to have a taste next time.
While Jane was calm, someone was just feeling blue in the other corner of the city. Beth lay in a room with no lights on, staring at the huge French window opposite in a daze. She drank a lot and drown her sorrows after meeting Edward. Then she cried, shouted and smashed. And finally, she was too tired to fall asleep. But when she opened her eyes, all around her was endless darkness and scary silence. And those city lights that once made her feel glamorous were now like scorching jack-o-lantern, which were so bright that drove her crazy.
Sometimes she was so sad that she wept herself out, and sometimes she even wanted to kill someone. With all of these thoughts emerging in her mind, she suffered from physical and mental fatigue, though she didn't move.
The phone that was muted lit up in the dark. Someone called many times, but Beth just didn't concern until another text message appeared on the screen. She glanced over and saw some familiar words. Then she slowly picked up the phone.
"I saw Edward and Jane having dinner together."
Though it were a few words, Beth just stared at the name 'Edward'. As if she could see him through the text.
She was in so much pain at home, while he just took his new love out above board. Did he ever care about her feelings?
At this moment, the anger overshadowed the sadness. Beth called back and it was connected quickly. "Beth, where are you? I called you but it didn't get through." the woman said eagerly.
Beth said in a low voice, "When did you see them eating together?" she even didn't want to mention their names.
The woman said, "Just now, ten minutes ago. They came out of the restaurant, and then Jane got into Edward's car."
Beth said nothing and it seemed that the woman was even angrier than her. "They were way out of line and I can't even stand it. You clearly warned her to stay away from Edward, but she didn't do as you said, and even got more arrogant. She is definitely provoking you!"
Beth got pissed off again, and she even wanted to tear Jane up.
The woman didn't know that Beth and Edward had broken up, and thought that they were just arguing. So she continued to stir up the trouble and said, "If it wasn't for Jane, you and Edward wouldn't have fought. Where there's smoke there's fire. I don't believe that she has never spoken ill of you behind your back. And now, I really want to beat her up to vent my hatred and let her know who calls the shots here!"
Beth said, "I'll go find her now."
"What? Find whom? Jane? "
"She needs me to teach her a lesson."
The woman knew that Beth has made up her mind. But she was a little bit scared, not for anything else, but for being implicated if something bad happen. So she changed her mind and persuaded her, "You don't have to find her. She is not worth it. And if you are angry, just call her and scold her first to see if she dares to talk it back. If she does, I will go with you immediately and tear the little bitch up!"
Beth said angrily, "I don't want to talk to her now."
The woman said, "Calm down. You don't have to be angry with a slut. What you should do now is to be calm and behave arrogantly. And even if she gets hit by someone like you, she'll just have to suck it up. If she dares to talk back, then let's kick her ass together!"
When being furious, one could easily do as the people around said. Also, the woman's words made Beth angrier, and she suddenly knew the best way to attack Jane.
Jane sit in front of the computer and made a video call with Eloise who suddenly had a problem that she couldn't work out. So she called Jane in the middle of the night and asked if she had time. While Jane had already laid down, she immediately got up and turned on the computer after hearing this. Then the two solved the problem online simultaneously.
The phone rang suddenly. Jane picked it up and took a look at it. Seeing the name 'Beth' on the screen, she didn't answer it and put the phone on mute.
While she was explaining the problem to Eloise, Beth called her seven or eight times, but Jane didn't care at all.
Eloise said, "Thank you, Miss Cooper. I'm so sorry to bother your so late."
Jane smiled. "No problem. Call me anytime if you have any problems."
"Okay, then I'll hang up first."
"Well, go to bed early. Good night."
After turning off the video, Jane closed the computer and was going to sleep. And she almost forgot that Beth had just called if she hadn't picked up the phone and the screen automatically lighted up with several text messages.
She lifted the quilt. As she got to bed, she unlocked the phone and checked the messages.
The first one was, "Your mother is a home wrecker, and so are you. Well, are you addicted to being a mistress?"
Jane paused for a moment, and her face illuminated by the screen was so pale which was a little bit scary.
Before she checked others, the screen switched to the incoming call page again. And Jane answered with a poker-face.
