Chapter 68 My Wife Pinched My Hand
Dr. Zhang grabbed his head. He was full of annoyance and asked, "What are you doing here? Is there anything I can do for you?"
Holding Wu Xiyuan's hand, Su Jiuyue was standing where they were and timidly said, "Yes, Dr. Zhang. We are here to get this prescription filled."
And then, Dr. Zhang led them to the room for storing herbs. They entered the room, embraced by the smell of various herbs. Wu Xiyuan wrinkled his nose, feeling disgusted.
"I only have these on hand, but they are not as available as food during a hard time," Dr. Zhang said.
Su Jiuyue compressed her lips and opened the bamboo basket on her back. She then took out some sweet potatoes and put them on the table beside her.
Liu Cuihua asked her to take some sweet potatoes and told her that paying by food was much more useful than paying money because people might not buy food even they had money, especially in Niutou Town for it was quite turbulent at present.
Dr. Zhang was stunned for a while as Su Jiuyue showed him the sweet potatoes. He then asked, "What are you doing?"
Su Jiuyue said, "Sorry, I don't have money right now. Could I buy medicine with sweet potatoes?"
Dr. Zhang was very kind and he always offered help to others who were in trouble. So, he gave his sister sweet potatoes even though there wasn't much food for his family.
He was about to refuse instinctively but he bit it back at the thought of his two children and what his wife had said just now.
"Well...fine, leave these sweet potatoes. What medicine do you need?"
Su Jiuyue showed him the prescription Huang Husheng had written, "Here is the prescription."
Dr. Zhang looked at the prescription. He found the medicine listed on it were some common medicine, and he gave them three doses.
"It's not because I'm petty but they were just common medicine. Take them back and I'll give you more if the patient is not well. And if the patient is recovered after taking the medicine, he doesn't need to take it anymore."
Su Jiuyue knew she benefited more since sweet potatoes were too cheap.
She then took out some rice from her pocket, which could only fill a small bowl, and put it on the table. She said, "Dr. Zhang, here is some rice. My mother-in-law asked me to give it to you. Please take it although it was not much because we also had little."
Rice and flour were rare things these days. Besides, almost every family was short of rice or flour. After roughly calculating, Dr. Zhang realized that he actually benefited much more.
Therefore, he immediately asked Su Jiuyue to take sweet potatoes back. Su Jiuyue politely refused, "You helped us too much before. And now you're having a hard time, please take it as the fee I should have paid you."
Dr. Zhang was about to reject but a heavy cough outside the room made him bite his words back.
Wu Xiyuan got frightened by the cough. He moved to Su Jiuyue step by step and held the hem of her clothes, which seemingly gave him more courage.
He then raised his chin and said, "Dr. Zhang, your wife is too fierce. My wife is different. She has never been fierce to me."
There was dead silence inside and outside the room. Su Jiuyue felt awfully embarrassed. She then held and pinched Wu Xiyuan's hand, meaning not to speak anymore. Su Jiuyue forced a smile, "Sorry, Dr. Zhang, but Xiyuan is not offending you. Please forgive him."
Wu Xiyuan wanted to explain but Su Jiuyue pinched his hand again as he just said "I". He pursed and looked at Su Jiuyue, "I'm telling the truth, sweetheart. Why do you pinch my hand?"
