I wanted to know the depth of the situation regarding Marc's condition so I followed them.As we entered the corridor leading to the doctor's chambers we met a man who was wearing a well-cut suit he walked towards us and smiled as he held out his hand “ Mrs. Garcia, I'm very happy to meet you.”"The pleasure is all mine doctor but please address me as Carmen and not Mrs. Garcia,” I said sharply looking at Cathy.“This is Doctor Terence the specialist, who has been called in to take over Marc's case,” Cathy explained.I looked at him and said.” You are a psychiatrist?”“Among others,” He said cheerfully as he looked at me curiously. “ And why shouldn’t I call you that?” “We had separated a while ago but not divorced,” I told him firmly.“But he thinks that you are still married to him.” “Whatever he thinks doesn’t matter, we've separated a long time back,” I told him insisting. “ Oh well but if he will not accept then you are still bound to remain his wife, till he divorces you right?”“That’s absurd !” I exclaimed. He gave me a shrewd smile and said.” But you are here Mrs. Garcia which indicates that you accept that he still feels something for you.”My color rose and I looked towards Cathy. “ I came because his mother begged me to.”“Nevertheless, whatever reasons you give yourself, you came right? Which says that you have still feelings for him.”“No,” I said, as I clenched my hand hands at my sides. All I had was sympathy for him. Nothing else. The doctor turned and smiled at Cathy. “I think it would be a good idea for me to talk to Mrs. Garcia alone .” He took my arm and said pleadingly. “ would you come along to my office, please? Don't worry I won't bite you.” He said after looking at my alarmed face.I smile at him awkwardly before following him.“I'll wait for you here, dear,” said Cathy.I followed the specialist through the corridors to his white-painted office. He offered me a chair and I sat down on the other side of his desk smiling at me his eyes were probing.“Do you know that your husband has lost his memory? He enquired.“Cathy told me.” I confirmed.“Did he tell you what his last memory was?"I was feeling the pain in my heart and said. “Yes. I am aware of it.”“Will you please tell me what did he tell you?” He urged.I shrugged. “I don't see the need for me to give you any information.”“Please Mrs. Garcia it will be helpful for me for his treatment, so please corporate.” He pleaded and I felt bad for him after all he is just a doctor trying to heal his patient.I let out a deep breath and said, “He remembers, us coming back from the trip we made to Seychelles.”“And when was that Mrs. Garcia?”“Six years ago before we separated.”“Is there any relevance in that for you?” He asked suddenly. My smile froze in confusion. What relevance I thought. After a long moment, I said huskily. “That day after we got back my husband and I had quarreled and I left him and went back to our apartment and he had…… ”I stopped speaking as I could not go on it brought tears to my eyes, as I did not want to go back into the time and see those things again. The doctor leaned forward his hands on the desk staring at me thoughtfully. “What happened Mrs. Garcia ?” “He was unfaithful to me.” I told him at last, biting the words out of my mouth. There was silence for some time. “ Did you see it with your own eyes?”I nodded. I remembered the time when I had gone back home and after twisting and turning the whole night had returned to get my husband back but saw him entangled with another woman. Then he saw me when Dave held me in his arms and it added fire to the already heated quarrel and he left me and I went back to London.“And you left him but why didn't you seek for divorce from him?” The specialist question made me jump as I was lost in another world.“I had sent him the divorce papers through my lawyer but he refused to sign it. ”I told him flatly.“The doctor scratched his chin and there was a smile was on his mouth. “This is an open and shut case isn't it?”“ I don't know you tell me.” I said shaking my head.“Come on Mrs. Garcia.”“Don't call me that doctor!” I said bitterly. The Doctor looked at me thoughtfully and said. “Miss Carmen, what's in a name? There can be no question about it can there? Your husband bitterly regrets letting you go, the whole subject of what followed the day you left him. He has removed it from his memory because in his present state, he is subconsciously aware that he cannot face it. Until the strength in his body returns, I suspect his memory will not return. “I wish I would argue with what he said but common sense made it too reasonable. “What then? we can't go on pretending like this and I am engaged to another man.”He nodded. “So I understand. How long have you been engaged?” “Just over a week,” I informed him.The doctor's eyes widened. “Is it? That's very interesting !”I stared at him confused as he was smiling."And when did you send the divorce papers to him again ?” He probed again.“Just the next day it was exactly a week ago.”He smiled with satisfaction. “Just what I had thought. I had suspected it but now you have confirmed it, as I said an open and shut case almost too neat.”“What do you mean doctor?”“Has it occurred to you that after you sent him the divorce paper, it could have caused Marc to crash his car, causing him amnesia.” He asked seriously.I glared at him and said. “You can't relate both the things together doctor.”He smiled at me and said.” Of course I can’t but he isn't pretending Mrs. Garcia. He has truly lost his memory of those six years that you had separated from each other. The brain is very miraculous in its capacity it shuts out painful memories for its protection, as I say when he is physically perfect he will permit his memory to return to.”“And when is it going to happen doctor?” He shrugged and said. “ It can come back tomorrow, a week, a month or even years………I must insist that you don't disillusion him until I allow it. The shock could be very harmful.”I bit my lip in shock and then said nervously.” He is not going to die doctor. I'm sure of it now, he was far too strong when I saw him today.”“Shock can kill a perfectly healthy human being believe me Mrs. Garcia. If a man is severely injured as your husband was it could be dangerous for his health.” He said plainly confirming my doubts. I close my eyes. “Oh my God ! but I don't know how much more of this I can take.”I took my leave and told Cathy I was going outside for some fresh air. She looked at me helplessly but did not object. As I reached the park I found a chair and sat down and cried my eyes out, as I was in emotional turmoil. My phone started buzzing and I saw it was from aunt Beth. I quickly wiped my tears and received the call. “Mommy, I am back from my trip, how are you? How is Milan treating you? When are you coming back?” Tio said in one breath and I smiled.“Hey honey, first tell me how was your camping trip? Did you enjoy it?” I asked him lovingly. It was so good to hear his voice.“It was great as a usual mom. Lenny and I learned to make a bird’s nest it is so beautiful and the night fire camp was an adventure. I will show you the pictures once you come back.” He told me excitedly.I paused and listened to him talk away then took a deep breath and said. “Tio, will you forgive me if I stay in Milan for some time as I need to be here, looking after your fathers matters. It can even be for a fortnight?”Tio was quiet for some time and said. “Mom I miss you already but if you have to then please stay back and finish everything before coming. But I will send you a long shopping list and you have to promise me to bring it for me. I miss your hugs and your sweet smell around the house.”Tears were falling down my cheeks and I promised him, I will get him everything. Then he handed the phone over to aunt Beth, who listened to everything that I had to say and she in return assured me that I don’t have to worry about Tio as she will be happy to take care of him. I thanked her again and again. She advised me to take care of myself and then hung up.There was one more task that I had to do. I had to call Don. I knew he woudn't be too happy about it.
