I had not seen him for the last six years.The corridor had an antiseptic smell as I walked with my heels on it started making noise and I regretted wearing a heel. I allowed Mathias to lead me to the ward as I was too dazed because of the surroundings around me.As soon as we entered my heartbeat started beating rapidly and I saw Cathy running towards me with her arms outstretched.“Carmen you are here!”Cathy lent forward and kissed my cheek.” He's so weak Carmen you will see what I mean. He's too weak to say much don't let him talk just smile at him.”Smile! Carmen groaned.Cathy opened the door of the room in which he lay and took my hand, leading me across the door towards the bed.A nurse sat at the little desk. She turned her head standing up eyes curious. “Hello.” I glanced at her briefly before turning my head towards the bed.My heart was thudding violently and I was perspiring everywhere.His head lay on the bed and was bandaged all over. The covers were raised on a cradle indicating some damage to the limbs he had and one of his arms was plastered.I was deliberately looking at the exterior details of his appearance because I was afraid to look at his eyes which were now open and visible between the bandages staring at me intently.Cathy's hand tucked my arm imploringly. I was rooted to the spot for a moment breathing very heavily as I could not control my breathing.“Carmen.” His voice whispered my name almost too faintly to be heard.I went to his bed slowly my legs trembling. I was so nervous, I couldn't calm my nerves.“ I was afraid you were dead as you were not coming to see me .” He said softly in a horse and faint voice pausing for breath when he spoke every word.“I'm sorry I had been away for some work,” I said huskily. “ I came back as soon as I heard.”He studied my face with a familiar glint in his eyes. “You must not be frightened.” He murmured. “Nothing is going to happen to me and no one is going to make me die.” And a smile played in those dark eyes. “When they were not bringing you, I thought you were dead. I could not bear to live without you but now that I've seen you I fully intend to walk out of here recovering as fast as I can.”His final declaration made me catch my breath. My hands went ice cold. I was looking back over my shoulder I could see Cathy’s watch full face looking at me very sternly.When I looked back at him Marc searched my face with a frown on his facial features. “Carmen, aren’t you going to kiss?” He spoke very huskily when he took my name and it made me blush and his eyes flickered mockingly as I saw the color rise in my cheeks.Bending my head my heart drumming, I touched my mouth to his very lightly. I would have straightened and advanced, but his unhurt arm came up to touch my face, his fingertips stroking my cheek. I could feel his hand drop suddenly and my eyes got closed.I looked at him in panic and Cathy’s arm came around me.Cathy led me out of the room with an arm around me. “ It happens like that he just falls back into sleep, all of a sudden. But this time I think he will sleep peacefully now that he knows that you are safe. Oh Carmen, Thank you so much, sweetheart. "I turned towards her and said. “Don't thank me for God's sake !”“I realize it was a trauma for you.” Cathy tried to speak.“A Trauma?” I was trembling my face had gone white. “It was hell. Why do you think I am made up off? Iron? I had to stand there and kiss him and hear mean call me ….”I swallowed, “Tesoro.” I said furiously. “It was such an awkward situation Cathy and you have the guts to thank me.”I pulled off from her embrace and went out of the hospital sobbing hoarsely not caring as the people stared at me. I came out and went to a small park near the hospital. I cried my eyes out as I tried to calm myself.After some time I found myself facing Mathias.He looked at me in pity. “You look terrible.” “Leave me alone Mathias please!’ I whispered. “I'll take you back home, you can go and rest.”"I think I had enough for the day I want to go back home as soon as possible Mathias, can you make the necessary arrangement for it. ”I requested him urgently.“Don't be silly to get your divorce you need to stay here for some days and you have come so far just for that .please stay and finish your work before you leave,” Mathias said urgently. I pulled my arm from him and said. "Don't you understand? I've had enough I want to go home. I've had enough of the Garcia's for one day.” Then I laughed wildly. “Stop what am I saying for one day no for a lifetime! “I do understand,” he said quietly looking for more mature than his years. “But I cannot permit you to fly back right now as you are in a distressed condition and you must not be left alone Carmen and mom had ordered me to stay with you and take you home.I would have pulled away from him but he would not allow me to struggle and then he pulled me to his car and put me into it. The drive was even more silent than the one on the way to the hospital.As we drove away and left the confines of the city and were halfway towards the vineyard in Piemonte. I looked at the beautiful landscape and observed. “How do you manage to grow anything in this baking heat?” Though I had never observed very closely anything about the vineyard I was simply curious to know.Mathias shook his shoulders expressively and said.” We must grow the vines in a special way but ours is the most fertile area in the whole country. We are very fortunate, But I think Marc can tell you more about it as he is more knowledgeable than I am.”Hearing his name again brought back all the memories and I kept quiet for some time and thought about the few memorable times that we had spent at the vineyard.
