Chapter 50 - Her Parents

So when Selena caught a glimpse of the people who entered, she felt increasingly panicked though the exact reason she felt this way eluded her.
On the other hand, Mr. and Mrs. Preston who came in paused in surprise after having a clear view of the situation in the living room.
Their gazes then moved back and forth between the duo who were standing, not knowing what they were thinking of and the room fell into a strange silence, which Mrs. Preston quickly broke after coming back to her senses.
"Nathan! What a pleasant surprise!", She said with a wide smile on her face.
Nathan glanced at the woman standing beside him whose face has changed slightly after seeing her parents and something flashed in his eyes.
However, nothing could be told from his face as he faced the older woman in front of him who was an exact replica of Selena making it almost impossible for the two of them to be told apart if not for the obvious wrinkles and greying hair on the latter's being.
"Aunt, Uncle. Forgive me for intruding without a prior notice to inform you the I would be dropping by", He said after greeting them familiarly.
Both Mr. and Mrs. Preston looked at him strangely after he said this, with the latter saying doubtfully.
"Why are you acting so polite today? Have you ever had to inform us before coming prior to today?"
Nathan and her two sons had grown up together and this was practically his second home and the same can be said for her sons as well. So you could imagine how strange it was for her to listen to Nathan talk about 'intruding'.
Nathan also realised his gaffe on listening to her reprimand, he had forgotten for a moment that standing before him was a couple who had saw him grow up and he didn't have to pretend to be courteous in front of them.
Knowing he was wrong, he was quick in admitting his mistake but Mrs. Preston only smiled gently and said to him.
"This has and will always be your home, Nathan."
The scene was warmth-filled but Selena who was watching on the side only felt the panic in her heart intensify.
Seeing how much her mother and father who although said nothing seemed to agree with his wife's words, she knew that they really liked Nathan.
She had nothing against it but what if...
...they agreed to really agree to go ahead with the marriage alliance because of this?
So, on seeing the ambiguous looks thrown her and Nathan's way by her parents, she quietly put a distance between the two of them, not wanting her parents to misunderstand anything.
This fell into Nathan's gaze but he pretended not to notice.
"Mom, Dad. You are back", She greeted them on finally managing to get a word in.
Mrs. Preston looked at her darling daughter and a loving expression made its way onto her face.
Everytime she saw Selena, she couldn't help but be thankful that she had finally be found, although it had taken almost 30 years to do that.
Having given birth to two boys who were actually twins, she had always wanted a girl but who knew that when she really did get her wish, her baby girl would end up getting kidnapped and seperated from her family.
In the end, the wait had taken this long with fate finally deciding to take pity on them and sending her back to their side.
Yet, sometimes she couldn't help but feel regretful towards the fact that she had never partook in her daughter's childhood.
She remembered that while she had still been pregnant with her, she had imagined that she would take her shopping and dress her in the most beautiful princess dresses, be the best friend that she could confide in all the time and so much more.
Yes, she knew she was being greedy, ungrateful even but wasn't that human nature?

Her girl had already grown so big before she was found and she barely needed her biological mother anymore.
Which mother who really loved her child wouldn't be heartbroken over that?
Selena saw her mother looking dazed and melancholic while staring at her and knew that she must be thinking of something related to her again. She couldn't help but feel helpless and at the same time sad on seeing her this way because she understood the fact that the person who had suffered the most after her disappearance was her mom.
And although she had repeatedly assured her that she hadn't been maltreated at the orphanage but instead had the luck to encounter people she could treat like siblings, she knew that the older woman still had regrets in her heart.
Walking to the woman, she took her arm gently before leading her to sit down and called out softly.
"Mom.."
Regaining her senses, Mrs. Preston looked up to see the looks of concern on her daughter's face as well as her husband and Nathan's and knew she had made them worry again.
Patting Selena's hands comfortingly, she said with a gentle smile.
"I am fine. I just couldn't help but think of some things but it also made me realise that I am already more luckier than most people and I should be counting my blessings."
On hearing her words, Mr. Preston relaxed visibly, although his expressionless face made it hard to notice. This was because he had been a strict person all his life, and now found it hard to smile normally but fortunately, his wife understood him quite well and gave him a reassuring smile.
After this, Mrs. Preston turned to the neglected Nathan and asked warmly.
"Are you here to look for Tyler or Ethan?"
At first, Nathan wanted to say that he was looking for neither of them but when his gaze flitted past Selena's nervous face, he realised that he couldn't possibly say that he was here to have a look of the woman who had a good probability of becoming his future partner since it might be taken the wrong way.
So he changed his mind and nodded his head in affirmation and because he had been paying attention to Selena, he saw her let out an inaudible sigh of relief.
"Tyler went on a business trip which he probably forgot to inform you about and well, Ethan is still on retreat trying to compose new melodies."
The eldest of the twins, Tyler inherited his father's mantle and became a businessman while the younger one, Ethan took after her and was a renowned pianist.
It was a joy to know that her children were both outstanding but it also made her sad since their remarkableness made it impossible for them to be home all the time.
This had made her lonely but fortunately, due to him getting old, her husband had gradually retreated from the scene t accompany her, leaving everything to Tyler.
It was also when they had gone to stay at a vacation home that they had been able to coincidentally meet Selena who looked like her.
She could only sigh that everything was all fated.
"...but they would both be back on Selena's official introduction banquet", She continued saying to Nathan.
Nodding understandingly, he said, "I was the one who was not thoughtful enough to inquire before coming over."
"Then I better get going."
"Not staying for lunch?", Mrs. Preston asked although she already knew the answer.
Sure enough, Nathan refused.
"No, Aunt. I have something to attend to today but I'll be having that lunch another day."
Mrs. Preston didn't try to stop him again after hearing that and only said to him.
"Then say hello to your mother for me, will you?"
Nathan nodded and made for the door but before that he gave Selena a deep look that she couldn't quite decipher...
