Chapter 64
Vanessa was immersed in shock and disappointment. When she heard Shawn call "Sister", she had an even more indescribable mood.
She knew that Juana, who lived a secluded life, had come.
She hadn't expected it would be such an embarrassing scene the first time she met with Shawn's sister.
She was familiar with the feeling of being betrayed.
Juana had been married for many years but was betrayed by her husband. When their scandal was exposed to everyone beyond expectation, no one could accept it.
If she was psychologically fragile, she would be likely to commit suicide.
But now Vanessa was just a stranger to Shawn's sister, and she didn't even have a position to comfort her.
So Vanessa restrained herself from showing sympathy on her face in front of Shawn and slowly turned around.
The hospital corridor was as silent as a morgue, and the cool breeze was blowing.
--Two seconds later, Vanessa turned around again and buried her head in Shawn's arms.
Although she opened her eyes, she did not roll her eyes a bit.
Shawn's chest was rising and falling from his breathing. Otherwise, she might think she was dreaming.
She patted herself on the cheek twice, took a quiet breath, and turned her head again.
Her brain was foggy, and she even thought everything was an illusion. So she blatantly looked at the eyes, nose, and mouth of the woman in front of her.
After measuring the woman three times, Vanessa was sure that she was indeed hallucinating.
It remained quiet in the hospital corridor for a long time and did not become lively though there were three living people.
Vanessa seemed like a statue, not moving nor blinking. She just stared at the person in front of her.
Shawn wrapped his arm around her shoulders and said calmly, "Vanna, this is my sister."
Sister?
Sister!
Vanessa finally blinked, and she was totally dumbfounded as if her head was struck by a lightning.
Juana was Rachel, and Rachel was Juana.
For a few seconds, she tried to think differently and put herself in others' shoes.
If one day her father brought Tom Cruise to meet her mother and said, "Honey, actually Tom is the brother I always talk about. Now I bring him here."
What would her mother do?
That woman, her mother, might faint on the spot.
Although Vanessa felt that she almost passed out on the spot.
She tried her best to make a sound.
"Sis-sister."
Her reaction might make people think that she was the one who should be lying in the Emergency Room.
Rachel nodded with an expressionless face.
She didn't know what kind of expression to put on even after she heard the speech of the girl in front of her who canceled her and slandered her.
But the next second, she heard the girl in front of her say, "You look like Rachel so much."
Rachel still didn't know what kind of expression to put on, so she nodded her head again.
"Well, that's what everyone says."
...
Rachel's words made Vanessa embarrassed to the extreme.
She was embarrassed as hell for the second time.
And it was still the kind of embarrassment that she could do nothing to defuse.
Suddenly, a nurse pushed the door of the ward open from inside and gestured for Rachel to enter it.
She answered the nurse and turned around to look at Vanessa and Shawn again. "I'll go in then."
Vanessa was silent and didn't move, and only Shawn replied, "Hmm."
Rachel turned around and walked toward the ward.
Meanwhile, Vanessa looked at the empty corridor in front of her and said coldly, "Don't you have anything to tell me?"
When Rachel heard that, she stopped and turned back. "Oh, yes. I got married and forgot to tell the fans."
Vanessa was stunned.
She was talking to Shawn.
--
After the ward door was closed, Vanessa slowly turned around and looked at Shawn.
She stared at him in a daze with the same expression as earlier as if she had lost her soul.
At this point, although Shawn's niece was lying in the hospital bed and his sister was experiencing the biggest media crisis in her entertainment career, he still wanted to laugh.
He reached out his hand to stroke Vanessa's hair and could not help but kiss her in the ear even though they were in the hospital.
"You're so cute."
Vanessa, however, did not feel any emotion change by the kiss.
She had hollow eyes and said without any emotions, "Is that funny?"
If Shawn knew his next answer would determine whether he would sleep in the living room or the guest room tonight, he would definitely not allow himself to smile.
--
In the ward, Sophia saw Rachel enter and immediately wanted to cry with a grievance.
"Mom, I saw the news."
She lowered her head and said in a choked voice, "I'm sorry."
Rachel let out a long sigh.
"Baby, you didn't do anything wrong."
She had gone to great lengths to hide she had been married all these years so that her family could live a normal life. She hoped they wouldn't be affected by her or followed by the entertainment media.
However, when she received a phone call and heard that Sophia was unconscious in a car accident, she couldn't care about privacy and rushed to the hospital directly from the show recording site.
No one who had never been a mother could understand what she suffered in her heart during the half-hour journey.
Hearing the doctor say Sophia was fine, Rachel felt like she had escaped from death but had her strength run out.
At that moment, she didn't think of herself as a star and forgot her behavior habits over the years. She couldn't help but hug her husband in the crowded hospital and cry silently.
Naturally, she should take the blame for being photographed.
Soon, Edward also came with some people.
Less than two hours later, the matter of Rachel and him was rapidly spreading on the Internet.
After confirming Sophia was fine, he received calls from all sides. Even his assistant's and secretary's phones were ringing off the hook.
At the same time, the traffic cops and the driver responsible for the accident also came to the hospital.
Sophia was a real victim of this car accident.
She had nothing to do in the afternoon and found an excuse to go to meet Lonn. But Lonn actually rejected her, so she planned to drive her car to ease up.
Unexpectedly, she didn't get her boredom relieved but was scared out of her wits by a driver who traveled on the wrong side of the road. She turned her steering wheel and directly bumped into a tree on the roadside.
When she woke up, she was already in the hospital.
Fortunately, she fainted because she was scared. She didn't get much physically hurt.
But when she woke up and knew the driver had caused the accident because of drowsy driving after taking medicine for fever, she almost passed out again.
The driver was a young man and felt relieved when he knew although Sophia looked pale, she was fine.
However, when the traffic cops mentioned compensation, the driver remembered the price of the damaged sports car. He suddenly got panicked and tried to ask Sophia to show mercy for him with his hands trembling.
He, a man, burst into tears as he talked, which made Rachel feel terrible. So she did not want to see him anymore.
As far as she was concerned, nothing mattered as long as Sophia was all right.
So she pulled down the brim of her hat and waved her hand. "It's good that she is okay. I don't want to bother about the rest."
As soon as she finished her words, Sophia patted the bed and got up.
"Why not? I didn't die because I was lucky. Was it his luck?
"How could people like him get their driving license? Didn't he know how dangerous drowsy driving was? How could he drive when he couldn't open his eyes?
"Today, I did not die because I was young and reacted quickly. What if it was an old man in poor health?
"If we don't teach him a lesson, he'll go out and cause trouble next time!"
Everyone in the ward, including the traffic cops and doctors, was too shocked to say a word.
All of them looked at Sophia with dumbfounded eyes. This wealthy young lady said in a powerful voice, "Pay for my car, my medical treatment, and mental damage!
"Pay for everything! Even if he goes bankrupt, he has to pay!"
"Not bate a penny of it!"
Sophia finished her sentence but was still angry. She leaned against the back cushion and could not calm down for a long time.
She turned her head and saw Shawn and Vanessa at the door.
She didn't know when Lonn appeared there.
Realizing she went against her public persona as a delicate little princess, Sophia slowly turned around and closed both of her eyes, pretending to pass out again.
--
Since Sophia was not seriously injured, it was inconvenient for all her family to stay in the hospital.
Edward stayed there with Sophia, and Rachel had to deal with her public relations.
When Shawn sent Rachel away, many reporters had already gathered outside the hospital.
Reporters from TV stations, newspapers, and many paparazzi were there with cameras set up everywhere, attracting the pedestrians' attention a lot.
Rachel was very experienced in dealing with this kind of situation and would not let them find out her whereabouts, so she did not appear at the gate or parking lot.
Vanessa, on the other hand, was not so calm.
Not long ago, Vanessa had a photo shoot with Rachel hastily at the airport. She thought it was the closest encounter with her in her life.
After all, ordinary people and those in the entertainment industry seemed to be separated by a barrier. They seemed to be only living on the screen instead of the real world. Sometimes, they even made ordinary people feel that they actually lived in another parallel space.
As a result, in the blink of an eye, someone told her that this household superstar was her boyfriend's real sister, given birth by the same father and mother.
It only took Vanessa an hour to accept this reality. She thought that she did it well.
Before Rachel could get into the car, Vanessa finally remembered to make an apology.
"I'm sorry, sis-sister... I said those words today because I didn't know you were Sophia's mother."
"It's okay. I didn't blame you."
She turned back and glanced at Shawn. "But Shawn never told you that?"
...
Rachel did not know that she had personally pushed her brother into the abyss of suffering by that reasonable question.
--
The waning sun was like blood surging in the sky as if it were a slow-motion movie scene.
After seeing Rachel's minivan left, Shawn raised his hand and tried to hold his girlfriend's hand and go to the parking lot.
However, he was pushed away violently when he touched her fingertips.
Shawn was caught off guard and stepped backward.
He raised his eyebrows and looked at Vanessa.
"What's wrong?"
How dare he ask that question?
This second, he was back to single.
Vanessa turned her head and headed for the hospital's main entrance, the quickness of her footsteps and her momentum made Shawn realize that she was truly angry.
He went after her and called her flatteringly, "Vanna?"
Vanessa not only ignored him but also walked faster.
Shawn reached out to pull her, but his hand was thrown away.
He tried that again, but he was pushed away again.
When Vanessa walked out of the hospital gate, Shawn held her hand so tight that she could not shake it off.
Vanessa did not struggle anymore and stopped to move.
She was furious and looked across the street, not glancing at the man beside her.
Shawn looked at her sideways.
"Are you angry?"
Vanessa did not respond.
The street was crowded with people. With Shawn's knowledge of Vanessa, it was probable that she would do something, so he said, "Let's go home first."
Vanessa said, "I'm homeless."
Shawn didn't know what to say.
He sighed lightly and stood in front of Vanessa. Then he bent down a little, doing all the superficial work of coaxing people.
"I didn't tell you about this at first because I wanted to give you a surprise."
But it turned out to be a shock.
Was that so?
Vanessa snorted coldly and turned away her face.
Shawn reached out and cupped her face with his thumbs rubbing it gently. "Don't be angry, okay?"
Vanessa didn't say anything but looked straight at a place across the street with her gaze over Shawn's shoulders.
She looked at it for a long time.
Shawn's eyes moved slightly, and he asked, "What are you looking at?"
Vanessa blinked and looked like she was thinking about something carefully. "I'm wondering if they take an abandoned boyfriend."
Shawn looked out following her gaze.
Across the street was a store with a large signboard in front of it, saying recycling old stuff.
A loudspeaker repeated saying, "Collect... old... stuff!"
