Chapter 46

Chapter 46
Shawn's words directly made Vanessa suppress the tears in her eyes and she did not feel sad at all.
At first, Vanessa was a little confused, thinking that she had heard it wrong.
However, it was such a simple sentence.
How could she have heard it wrong!
At that moment, Vanessa's sadness and hidden thoughts were gone, and there was only a buzzing sound in her mind.
Why did Shawn suddenly say that at this time?
Vanessa was so dumbfounded that she stared blankly at the wall for a while and then turned to glance at Shawn.
Shawn looked nonchalant and he looked at the posters on the wall calmly and did not seem to feel that what he said was wrong or inappropriate.
Vanessa did not even feel sad anymore.
Vanessa stared blankly at Shawn for a few seconds and looked away.
Vanessa's temperature was getting higher, and even the blush on her face became more obvious.
"You... I..."
Hearing Vanessa fumbling helplessly for words for a long time, Shawn turned to look at Vanessa and said calmly, "Isn't that true?"
Although what Shawn had said just now was only temporarily angry words, Vanessa thought it was true when she thought it over.
Otherwise, what would the two adult men and women do at this time?
Just holding hands and watching a movie?
Vanessa had tried her best to win Shawn's affections, so their current state was a bit of a waste of her mobility before.
Shawn looked at Vanessa sarcastically.
Since Vanessa was having a fever, she could not organize her thought very well. She was confused by Shawn's words at this time and thought the words seemed to make sense, so she nodded in a daze.
But so what? All the assumptions had fallen apart.
"Yes, you're right."
Shawn was speechless about Vanessa's words.
However, as soon as Vanessa finished speaking, the air seemed to shake slightly. The two fell silent again.
This short conversation brought out the barrier between Vanessa and Shawn that they already knew but ignored.
Vanessa's plain acknowledgment seemed to make the current situation even more embarrassing.
The subtle atmosphere made Vanessa feel as if her throat had tightened, and she could not speak.
The corridor was long and empty, but the atmosphere was solemn.
Vanessa leaned against the wall and did not know what to do.
Vanessa did not come to her senses until the announcer reminded her again to go to the window to get her blood test sheet, and she almost trotted to take it.
After Vanessa got the test sheet, she adjusted her breathing towards the window and then turned to walk to Shawn.
"I've got the test sheet. I'll take it to the doctor for a consultation."
Shawn merely said "H'm" in reply without saying anything, nor did he mean to go with her.
Vanessa went to the diagnosis room alone.
The doctor looked at the test sheet and said as he typed, "You got high white blood cells and it could be a bacterial infection. But you're not serious now. I'm prescribing you something for that first. If it doesn't help to reduce the fever tomorrow morning, you may need to be put on an intravenous drip. Have a good rest when you get back."
Vanessa nodded and said, "Okay."
When Vanessa came out with the prescription, she saw the empty corridor. She thought Shawn had gone and felt a sense of loss.
After taking two steps, Vanessa saw Shawn outside the hall, and she somehow felt a swell of happiness at the sight of him.
After lining up to get the medicine, Vanessa walked behind Shawn carrying the small bag of medicine.
Vanessa wanted to pull at Shawn's sleeve, but she never did it.
Vanessa stood still and did not even move a little.
Vanessa walked so quietly that it took Shawn a few seconds to notice that she was standing behind him.
Shawn turned to stare at Vanessa who was standing quietly. She looked down at the floor and her face was pale.
Vanessa held the plastic bag with her slender fingers and hung it beside her legs. It looked very cold under the light.
Somehow, Shawn wanted to hold Vanessa's hand, but when he looked up and saw her standing in piteous condition, which made him unsettled.
Shawn asked, "Why don't you speak?"
Vanessa looked up at Shawn and asked, "Sorry? What do you mean?"
Shawn said, "We'd better be going now."
Vanessa lowered her head and replied in a low voice, "Oh, okay."
--
-
On the way back, Shawn drove neither fast nor slow, and they said nothing along the way.
Vanessa felt very tired and sleepy at the moment.
Moreover, Vanessa easily fell asleep in a car that was driven smoothly.
However, Vanessa did not fall asleep at all tonight. She was so sober that she could even hear the sound of Shawn's breathing.
Vanessa did not know what to say, and this was not the right time to talk, so she just quietly leaned against the car window and looked like she was asleep.
At least this was what Shawn thought.
From his point of view, he saw that Vanessa was not only asleep but also slept soundly, not moving at all.
So when the car arrived at the place Vanessa lived, it was slowly stopped by Shawn. He remained silent with his hand on the steering wheel and did not move.
Vanessa did not know why Shawn did not wake up her.
But she just wanted to pretend to sleep.
Vanessa thought at least she could stay with Shawn for a little longer. Otherwise, she did not know when they would meet next time.
It was so quiet in the car that only the sound of their breathing could be heard.
The roadside stands were closing up, and the lights went out one by one. Those who worked overtime and returned late dragged themselves home, and their figures passed by the window one by one.
Vanessa leaned against the car window with her eyes closed, but her senses were heightened in a way that never happened before.
Although Vanessa did not see Shawn, she could feel Shawn's every move.
Sitting in a car, half a meter apart, made Vanessa very satisfied.
However, their quiet time together passed very quickly.
Twenty minutes had passed, but it seemed to Vanessa only a moment.
If Shawn's mobile phone did not ring, Vanessa might have continued to pretend to be asleep.
Finley Sanchez made a voice call to Shawn. As Shawn answered it, he unfastened his seat belt and loosened his tie.
Vanessa heard Finley say, "Let me ask you something. Are you free tomorrow night?"
Shawn edited a reply message: What's the matter?
A few seconds later, Finley's voice echoed in the car.
"I got some good news for you. Do you still remember the girl named Fiona you met last time? I remember you looked at her several times, right? Well, she seems interested in you. Tonight, she had a social meetup on behalf of her company, and then she asked me about you because she wanted to know you. Besides, she's free tomorrow, so she wants to know you if you're free to go out with her."
Shawn did not think much about it when he clicked on the voice message and played it out loud.
However, upon hearing this, Shawn frowned and subconsciously turned to look at Vanessa.
Shawn found Vanessa still asleep quietly.
However, Shawn was still agitated, and he did not intend to send the message back to Finley.
At this moment, Finley directly called Shawn. Before Shawn could speak, Finley continued, "I didn't mean to say that but there are not many girls like her who are smart, beautiful, and single. If I hadn't dated her friend for some time, I would have pursued her."
Shawn asked, "Are you really at loose ends?"
"I'm not idle. I just drank a little wine tonight, so I talked a little too much." Finley was drunk. Even his voice sounded a little indistinct and he spoke without logic, "I'm not joking. Would you like to go out with Fiona tomorrow? If you were not interested in her, I would pursue her."
Shawn wiggled his neck, switched the phone to his right hand, and replied sarcastically, "Didn't you just say that Fiona was your ex-girlfriend's friend? Do the moral constraints on you break down so quickly?"
"I've considered it and found that I'm not breaking the law." Finley explained exactly, "Buddha said that love for people is like holding a torch against the wind, which will bring about pain."
Hearing this, Shawn suddenly froze, and his leisurely eyes gradually focused on the windshield.
Finley did not notice that Shawn did not speak. Finley laughed and said, "The pain is not a concern."
Tonight, Finley was drunk and relaxed, but he did not deliberately come to be a matchmaker.
Finley would not encourage Shawn to pursue the girl he liked. The reason Finley made this call was to tell Shawn that he would pursue Fiona. At the same time, Finley was sure that Shawn would not deal with a girl Shawn had only met once.
After chatting for a while, Finley finally hung up.
Shawn looked down at his phone for a while. Suddenly, he felt that Vanessa was watching him.
As soon as Shawn turned to look at Vanessa, he saw her staring at him with her eyes wide open.
"You're awake?"
Vanessa nodded.
Shawn immediately looked away, fastened the seat belt, and started the car.
Vanessa knew very well that Shawn wanted her to get off.
But Vanessa did not get out of the car. She grabbed the seat belt cautiously and asked softly, "Will you go out with Fiona tomorrow?"
Shawn suddenly stopped moving, and he tilted his head to look at Vanessa.

After a while, Shawn understood what Vanessa meant.
"Did you hear that?"
Vanessa nodded again.
"I heard a little."
Shawn held the steering wheel, looked at the street lamp in front of them, and smiled.
"It's none of your business."
All right.
Vanessa knew that she was not qualified to ask this question now.
"I didn't mean to bother you. I'm just asking."
After Vanessa finished speaking, she unfastened her seat belt and opened the car door to get out.
Just as one of Vanessa's legs stepped down, her wrist was suddenly grabbed by Shawn.
"Do you want me to go out with Fiona?"
Vanessa kept sitting with her back to Shawn, even though her wrist was held by him.
Vanessa hesitated for a few seconds before she slowly turned around.
How could she want Shawn to date Fiona?
When Vanessa thought that Shawn was going to date another woman, she thought that the fever would probably not be reduced.
"No." Vanessa shook her head, "I don't want you to go out with Fiona."
However, Shawn had expected that Vanessa would say that, so he was not much surprised when he heard it.
Perhaps Vanessa had said that too much before, and it sounded a little ironic at this moment.
Instead of letting go of Vanessa's hand, Shawn tightened his grip.
However, when Shawn gazed at Vanessa, he found that Vanessa had noticed the mockery on his face.
"Vanessa, aren't you ashamed to say that to me?"
Vanessa, "......"
Vanessa examined herself.
Vanessa could see no grounds for asking, nor did she have the right to say that.
But Shawn's words were too aggressive.
Must Shawn be so blunt?
Vanessa took a deep breath and tried to explain, "Because I have read the almanac, which indicated that it's not good for you to go out tomorrow."
Shawn was speechless about Vanessa's explanation.
Vanessa added, "If you go out, you'll meet a terrible fate."
Shawn was struck dumb at Vanessa's words.
Shawn smiled, suddenly let go of Vanessa's hand, and said coldly, "Go back to sleep."
Vanessa took her bag and took two steps. Then she looked back at Shawn worriedly and spoke loudly, "It's true. Be careful tomorrow."
Shawn did not know what to say.
Shawn drove away quickly without even turning on the signal.
--
-
Tonight, Vanessa lost sleep.
Vanessa tossed and turned in bed until there was a glimmer of light outside the window.
The next morning, Vanessa got up late, and she felt even more powerless. Her temperature rose instead of failing.
Vanessa sat on the bed for a while, and then called the company to ask for leave. Then she went to the hospital with yesterday's blood test sheet.
The doctor Vanessa had consulted last night was also on duty this morning. He was not surprised at all when he saw Vanessa come.
The doctor prescribed the medicine for Vanessa and asked her to wait for an infusion in the emergency room.
Vanessa came early, and she did not see many people in the emergency room.
They were all patients and they did not talk with each other, so the emergency room was particularly quiet.
It was raining outside, and there was a smell of disinfectant, which made everyone in the room feel a little sad.
This was especially true for Vanessa.
For Vanessa who worked, lived, and went to the hospital alone in the strange city, she could not feel more lonely in such an environment.
Moreover, Vanessa had to face the thing that she was most afraid of.
More and more patients came to receive the drip infusion. After a while, the emergency room was full of people.
However, it magnified Vanessa's loneliness.
Vanessa glanced around and found that she seemed to be the only girl who came alone.
The rain was getting heavier and heavier.
The people who came in from behind brought in a chill from the outside.
Looking at the work-related messages on her phone one after another, Vanessa felt powerless for the first time.
Vanessa rubbed her eyes and was about to turn off her phone when Sophia suddenly sent her a message.
Sophia: Vanessa, are you busy now?
Vanessa: No.
Sophia: I want to ask you about something.
Vanessa: Go ahead.
Sophia: Mr. Foster, the person I met yesterday afternoon, is the blind date you mentioned before, right?"
Vanessa: Yes.
Vanessa thought over it and added: We are all forced to go on the blind date, and we're just friends."
Sophia: Really? Don't you like him?
Sophia: Doesn't he like you?
Vanessa: No.
Although Vanessa had never pursued anyone before, she was often pursued by men.
Judging from Vanessa's experience, she knew that when a man like Lonn was interested in a woman, he would take the initiative and not waste time playing a roundabout game.
When they first met, Lonn had said that he had no intention of dating at all.
Vanessa also had an invincible faith in his words. After chatting with Lonn several times, she knew that he had too many goals to achieve, and he had no desire to be in a relationship.
Vanessa: Why did you suddenly ask about Lonn Foster?
Sophia: Nothing, I'm just asking.
Vanessa held her phone and remained silent for a moment. Then, with a hint of expectation, she sent a message to Sophia: Did your uncle Shawn ask you to do this?
Sophia: ?
Sophia: No, what does it have to do with my uncle? He never pays attention to that.
Vanessa: Oh, I see.
Sophia: It's me who's interested in Mr. Foster.
Vanessa: ?
Vanessa: ? ? ? ?
Sophia: Is that shocked?
Sophia: Vanessa, do you forget that I'm single?
Vanessa: No, I don't think Loon's suitable for you.
Sophia: ?
Sophia: Why?
Vanessa: Lonn doesn't have any plans to start a relationship at present.
Sophia: Well, I don't believe men's nonsense the most.
Vanessa: ......
Sophia: Vanessa, could you do me a favor?
Vanessa: How can I help you?
Sophia: You can ask Lonn to go out with you, and I'll go with you, too.
Vanessa: Okay, but Lonn's busy. I'm not sure when he'll be free.
Sophia: It doesn't matter. It's not urgent.
Sophia: You just ask him if he's free tonight to go out.
Vanessa: "..."
It was "not" urgent at all.
Vanessa: Not today.
Sophia: Why?
Vanessa: I'm ill.
A few seconds later, Sophia directly called Vanessa.
"Are you ill? What's wrong? Is it serious?"
Vanessa said, "I'm fine. I'm just having a fever."
Sophia asked, "Have you seen a doctor?"
"Yes, I'm put on an intravenous drip in the hospital," said Vanessa.
"Isn't that serious?! Is anybody there with you?" asked Sophia.
"It's okay. Don't worry."
When Vanessa looked up, she found that her first bottle of fluids was almost finished, so she said, "I'm going to call a nurse. I'll hang up first."
"Oh, okay. Take good care of yourself."
--
-
When Vanessa put on the second bag of medicine, she was already very sleepy.
But she did not dare to sleep because she was here alone. If she fell asleep, no one would call a nurse for her.
After more than ten minutes, Vanessa felt so sleepy that she finally came up with a solution.
Vanessa first estimated the time when this bottle of fluids would finish, and then set an alarm clock. Then she leaned against the chair and began to sleep at ease.
Soon, the sound around Vanessa gradually disappeared. She tilted her head and fell asleep.
--
-
When the alarm clock rang, she opened her eyes first and was in a daze for a while. Only then did she slowly come to her senses and recall what she was doing before sleeping.
Vanessa first look up to see if the fluids were finished.
However, the moment she looked up, she found that Shawn was standing beside her.
In the crowded emergency room, Shawn just stood there in a thin white shirt, which made it impossible for Vanessa to ignore him.
Shawn was standing right next to Venessa at this moment.
As a result, Vanessa thought that she had mistaken Shawn for someone else, or that she had not woken up from her dream.
Vanessa looked at Shawn in a trance. However, he was half bent, as if he did not notice Vanessa's eyes.
Vanessa thought it was more like a dream.
Vanessa wanted to touch Shawn to assure her that it was him.
As soon as Vanessa raised her hand, someone pressed her down.
"Don't move."
A female voice sounded.
Vanessa turned to look in the direction of the voice. The medicine bag was already shriveled, and the nurse was bending down to pull out the needle for her.
The moment Vanessa felt something off the back of her hand, she realized that she was wearing a suit jacket.
The jacket smelt of Shawn's usual perfume.
Vanessa slowly realized that Shawn was here for real.
Shawn did not look at Vanessa until he took the swab from the nurse and pressed it down on Vanessa's arm. He said softly, "You dare to sleep alone in the hospital for an injection. How careless you are!"
For no reason, Vanessa's eyes were pantothenic.
Vanessa suddenly wanted to cry.
After a while, Vanessa choked with sobs and asked, "Why are you here?"
After saying this, Vanessa was already immersed in her emotions, almost out of control. With some grievances and complaints, she said, "Didn't I tell you not to go out..."
Shawn removed the swab. Seeing that the needle hole was no longer bleeding, he slowly straightened his back and looked down at Vanessa.
Shawn's voice was very heavy and helpless.
"Aren't you the terrible fate in my life?"
