Chapter 98 Unapologetic
Teresa said, "Grandma, no worry. I'll tell him tonight. Do you want Chad to send you over tomorrow or us to pick you up?"
"I will ask Chad to drive me there. Maybe I will arrive in the afternoon. On weekends, he doesn't get up until noon."
Her grandchildren could only get a good rest on weekends, so Madam Donovan didn't want to disturb them early in the morning. She would like to let them sleep until they woke up naturally. So, she planned to go there in the afternoon.
"Okay, what do you want to eat? I'll cook them for you."
Madam Donovan would come in the afternoon, so it would not affect her lunch with Ezra. If Madam Donovan came over in the morning, she would bring her together with them. And she didn't think it was improper because it would be her treat anyway.
"The dishes you cook are all delicious, and I love them all." Madam Donovan thought Hubert was lucky to have a wife who was so good at cooking after tasting Teresa's dishes.
All the other family members thought Teresa was pretty good, but Nora disliked that she had come from the countryside and that she was parentless.
Madam Donovan had told Nora many times that the Donovan family was extremely rich and didn't need any marriage to consolidate their status, so the kids' happiness was the most important.
Nora did not dare to refute Madam Donovan's words because she knew the latter liked Teresa very much. But she often complained about this matter to Roger. Madam Donovan always said Hubert was her favorite grandson, but she had made him marry a parentless countryside woman who would become a drag on him.
In the future, Hubert's younger brother and cousins would all marry young ladies from distinguished families. So, Nora was afraid Teresa would not fit in with the group or be respected by them. Fortunately, Hubert and Teresa had signed an agreement that they would divorce if they did not love each other after half a year. Knowing this, Nora felt better.
She thought she knew her son well. Even Sophie who was a young lady from a wealthy family could not win his heart, let alone Teresa. Hubert was just expressing filial piety and wanted to repay Teresa who had saved his grandma's life.
Nora had never revealed her dislike for Teresa because she needed to leave a way out for herself. After all, if Hubert fell in love with Teresa, she could only accept her as her daughter-in-law. And she also needed to teach her the etiquette in person because she did not want her to bring Hubert disgrace when accompanying him to banquets.
"Teresa, do your work. I made an appointment with an old friend, and it's almost time for us to meet. I need to hang up now. Remember to ask Hubert about it so he won't blame you." Madam Donovan knew that Hubert was domineering, so she reminded Teresa to ask him about it again.
Teresa said yes with a smile. After Madam Donovan hung up the phone, Teresa said to Gwen, "I think Hubert's grandma is somehow afraid of him."
Gwen replied, "It is normal for people to be afraid of him because of his temperament."
At the thought of Hubert's quicksilver temperament, Teresa fell silent, wondering how Vivian had convinced him to marry her.
...
Watenll Central Hospital.
Astra had the surgery yesterday, and it was successful. But she was still in the intensive care unit and had to be observed for two more days before being transferred to the general ward.
The cost of the intensive care unit and the surgery was high, so the Heller family felt distressed when seeing the daily medical expense bills every day.
Now, they were temporarily spending Robert and Astra's savings. But Robert had said that when Astra went home after being discharged from the hospital, he would let their children and grandchildren share the expense equally and return the money to him. When elders had no money, they would have no sense of security. Robert and Astra were selfish, and they were very clear that if they had had no money at all, their children and grandchildren would not have been so kind to them.
As the old saying went, a biological son was not as good as a purse.
Although they had only a few hundred thousand dollars, if the money was equally distributed to their children, they could get about one hundred thousand dollars each. No one would refuse a free lunch, right?
After the nurse brought yesterday's medical expense bill over, Robert picked it up to have a look. Then, he immediately showed a gloomy face and said, "It's been only a few days, but the money we deposited has been used up."
Then, he said to his children, "You negotiate about how much money each of you can take out now, chip in, and go to pay the bill tomorrow. Otherwise, the hospital would urge us."
"Dad, have you used up all of your money?" Tom asked.
Robert glared at him and said, "Why? Are you unwilling to pay? Do you think your mother and I have money to burn? How much have you paid since your mother got sick? We have raised you and helped you start a business. Now, your mother is sick, isn't it your obligation to pay for the medical expenses?"
Tom hurriedly said, "Dad, we didn't say we will not pay. But we don't know how much we will spend this time. You've been spending money like water these days." Even though they were a well-off family, Tom felt distressed to see his father spending money like water every day in the hospital. After all, they would have to share the expenses in the future.
It was okay for people to be poor as long as they did not get sick.
"You can only blame yourself for being incompetent and unable to control those two bitches. If you can control them, you won't need to pay the money. If you want to complain, complain about them. If you don't want to pay the money, you should figure out a way to make Teresa pay."
His second grandson had asked a friend to inquire about Teresa's current situation, so he knew she was running a large bookstore in front of Waternll City Middle School whose business was good. He had also heard she had an online store with good sales. His second grandson had said that Teresa's monthly income should be tens of thousands of dollars. However, Leila who used to aggrieve was not leading a happy life after getting married. Now, she was looking after her son at home and had no income.
Robert thought Leila deserved it. She had refused to let her husband pay three hundred thousand dollars as betrothal gifts, so his husband had married her without spending a penny. Naturally, he would not cherish her. She had asked for it!
Everyone fell silent.
When they needed to spend money, they felt pain as if someone was cutting their flesh. They had given up forcing Teresa to give them money, but now, they couldn't help racking their brains to think about how to make her pay again.
"By the way, Petter still can't go back to work at the company? Are people still talking about this matter on the Internet?" Robert asked.
He did not use the Internet. No matter how harshly netizens scolded him, he could not hear or see, so he had not been influenced at all.
Someone had come to the hospital to scold them at the very beginning, but the doctor had asked the security to drive them away. Then, they called the police. After the police intervened, those angry netizens restrained themselves much more. They had at most posted articles on the Internet to reprimand them, but no one had come to the hospital anymore.
After all, Astra was a patient who had just had an operation. Netizens said that the Heller family was too shameless. If Astra had any accident, the Heller family might sue them for scolding her and ask them to compensate them with a large amount of money. They did not want to suffer such a big loss after all.
